Gonna be different that's for sure. And great hunting and fishing opps. Just roll with it.
Oh, and KY has an Elk Draw, so there's that.

Just echoing what has already been said but there is a lot of great hunting/fishing opportunities all around Nashville. Land Between the Lakes NF is close by as well as numerous other WMAs. The WMAs will require draw applications so you might want to start looking into those for the 19/20 season. There is actually an elk draw in TN now but they only give out like 10 permits. Cheap to enter though.

I'm in TN, feel free to reach out if you ever have any questions

I'll echo what's already been said. You'll be close to Georgia too. Tons of good public land North of Atlanta with easy access. Good bear, deer, turkey and hog hunting with some really good trout streams too. Some of the backcountry areas are ROUGH, particularly Cohutta Wilderness. Hunting Cohutta can give you the same kinda feeling as hunting the Frank.

I’ve done some back country in CA in wilderness areas and that sucked; Was miserable the whole time. I’m going out this year to see how the hunting is and fishing. Just found out my parents put in offers on 3 houses. So I should have a place to call base camp while I’m out there.

My parents live near cookeville. Nice area haven’t hunted it yet but I was surprised by how many deer you can take. Not exactly sure but I think it was like 4-5 a season or something silly.
Ummmm.... it's 3 does a day in that part of the state. 2 bucks a year, used to be 4. If you draw any special hunts then those are bonus bucks. It's one of the things I miss most not having to draw a damn tag for ONE deer.

Stewart State forest has deer and turkeys, not far from Ft Campbell or LBL. Way more options and opportunities than in Cali.

Tons of opportunity here in Tennessee. Eastern Tennessee has a lot of public land as mentioned, Cherokee National Forest, Big South Fork. Don't overlook Land Between the Lakes (LBL). It's a fantastic place to hunt and is bow only with the exception of a couple draw hunts that are muzzle loader I believe and maybe a youth hunt. The first response hit the nail on the head so not really much to add. If you ever get down this way and want to explore the LBL area I can point you in the right direction as I use to hunt it a lot when I lived in the western part of the state. LBS is maybe an hour and half from Nashville and is about 80,000 acres in Tennessee and runs continuously into Kentucky and I think it's 120,000 acres on the Ky side. A lot of good deer come off of there every year.

Dunndm I have spent the past 20 years of my life in the Inland Empire of So Cal. Counting the days to get out. Traffic issues nearly round the clock now, as you stated 4 to 6 hours to get to a place to hunt that isn't full of people. I hope it works it out for you and your folks. We have old family friends from this area that left here many years ago to go to Washington state and wound up in TN. They love it there.

I’m originally from CA but now in Virginia for school. You are going to love the hunting opportunity out here. I believe Tennessee is pretty similar in that you get a whole bunch of deer tags and can shoot either sex. While it’s not the same as chasing mule deer, I have really enjoyed learning to hunt whitetails. If you take the same amount of effort required to kill a legal buck in CA to hunting whitetails, you will be crushing it in the whitetail woods. Feel free to PM me for some general info on getting up to speed for public land whitetails. I’m no expert by any means but I’ve learned a ton in the past few years and can help point you in the right direction to hit the learning curve hard!

I grew up in Tennessee and all of my family still lives there. Plenty of places to hunt and fish. A lot of game to pursue, deer, turkeys, hogs, and bear. High deer numbers makes it pretty easy to fill your freezer each year. Good luck with the move.

I’m heading there in the next few months for a birthday trip/ scouting trip! So I’ll give you a message in the next couple weeks to see what you got and try to pick your brain a little. Anything will help someone new to an area

Plus my parents did get the house they wanted; so looks like I’ll be going there a decent amount to see them once they officially make the move

I know absolutely nothing, except I have a good friend that used to live in a little town called Buchanan.
He tried hard to get me out to hunt an area he called “land between lakes”. Forest land, public. He always killed good (140”) bucks.
He was an archery guy. I just hadn’t developed Robin Hood skills, so I never went.
