Tell me about Tikkas

As a sidenote, you didnt ask for this advice so it may be worth exactly what you paid for it.

.30-06 is a great cartridge and will do anything you could want. But I would suggest considering something lighter recoiling. There are ALOT of great cartridges that will do the job and be more pleasurable to shoot.

This is great advice.

This will be my 4th 30-06, the others didn’t have any memorable recoil.
It’s a mountain rifle, it’s going to sting a little in some positions after a box or so….

What would you suggest?

I see you are in WNC like myself, im guessing most of your hunting is in the region, therefore long shots are maybe 300yds max, often much less.

Options are nearly endless.

6.5 creed is an obvious choice, TONS of cheap up to pricier ammo options on the shelf, mild recoil

My Tikka is in 308, most of .30-06 perf with a bit less recoil, even more ammo options

243 is attractive to me, faster, flatter, much less recoil, very common ammo, proven performer

270 has been getting it done for 100 years. recoil with 130gr about the same as 308 with 150gr but a good bit faster and therefore flatter trajectory

6 Creed, 7mm-08, the list goes on and on. Many will advocate for 223. I dont doubt its capabilities...results dont lie, but for medium and large game its not my pick.

anecdotal evidence: my 308 out of the box was OK to shoot.....borderline not fun for multiple magazines. The limbsaver changed it to shooting multiple boxes was no problem at all.

I love my 223 T3x.

The stock serves my purpose well, although I did add the vertical grip. I neither need nor use an ARCA rail, or anything more than a Harris bipod, so the stock stock is fine.

The trigger is pretty good. I am spoiled by the Geissele and Larue two stages I have on my ARs, though, so I added an aftermarket spring to it.

The only gripe I have is having to take off the safety to open the action. I prefer being able to open the bolt with the safety still on. It is a small thing, and proper safe gun handling renders it a moot point, but it is still my preference.

Near Hickory.

I’m not looking for a deer rifle, just want to talk about 30-06 SS gun for Alaska.

Open to suggestions, but nothing small, I have even considered a .338, but I don’t want a 338 mag

Ahhhh, gotcha. Moose? Caribou?

I too would want something toward the bigger end, despite the growing evidence that small will do the job.

Just some quick numbers on recoil energy, assuming 8lb rifle and Barnes Harvest loads all with the Tipped GameKing bullet(to keep things equalish) which needs a minimum of about 2000fps for reliable opening, and the range at which the bullet crosses 2000fps

.30-06 180 gr 2760fps G1 .545 23.62 ft-lbs ~410yds

.308 165gr 2680fps G1 .517 17.91 ft-lbs ~375yds

7mm-08 150gr 2725fps G1 .545 G7 .266 16.05 ft-lbs ~425yds

7mmPRC 180gr 2960fps G1 .632 G7 .305 29.04 ft-lbs ~640yds

6.5PRC 145gr 2910fps G1 .597 20.12 ft-lbs ~575yds

6.5 Creed 140gr 2700fps G1 .563 13.41 ft-lbs ~425yds

270 140gr 2960fps G1 .508 18.03 ft-lbs ~515yds

By these numbers, I like 270. 24% less recoil than .30-06, an extra 100yds effective range, LONG, proven history on virtually every animal on this continent, common ammo on shelves.

It should also be noted that ALL of these cartridges have an effective range beyond what most shooters should be attempting IMO.
