There is nothing wrong with a 30-06 ay all, but you can find them all day for $500 and under.
Get the rifle you want. I’d go for the one you been hoping for.
Or get them both.
My first deer was with a m70 featherweight 30-06.
Now if I owned one it would be a safe queen.

Since you reload go 300 WM, 22" barrel, call it good. No question IMO. Load on the light side it's close to a hot 30-06 in FPS. Or go full 300 WM loads. Lot of flexibility.

My 30-06 (22" barrel), 168 grain TTSX, right around 2780 fps.

Not a fan of 24" barrels for Western hunting applications. You will appreciate the shorter barrel when your hiking up/down hills, crawling on your knees, full belly crawl, etc.

My 300 WM, 175 grain LRX, 3011 fps, maximum velocity per manual is 3079 fps. If I loaded to minimal velocity, per reloading manual, 2779 fps.

Same bullet (175 grain LRX), 30-06, max grains, 2713 ps (H4350). So the minimal velocity for the 300 WM is 2779 and the max velocity for the 30-06 is 2713.

FWIW.

Thanks! This is what I was hoping someone could tell me. This helps me a lot.

If I was going with a 22” barrel and open to other cartridges, I’d find a Remington Model Seven SS in 300 SAUM or 7 SAUM.

Those rifles are AWESOME!!!

I have a Tikka 308 with a Leopold VII 3x9x40 for deer, Remington 700 Mountain rifle in 30 06 with a Swarovski 3x9x36 for deer, Browning X Bolt Speed in 30 06, with a Bushnell Forge 3x18x50 for elk and a Browning X Bolt Max Long Range in 300 win mag with a Bushnell 3x18x50 for elk. So my vote is yes.....lol. I also have a Winchester Model 70 243 with a Sightron 3x9x50 for other smaller stuff!

How’s that x bolt LR max treating you?

I love my 30-06 and bought it just for hunting elk. It's a CA classic and is perfect. It has a tight chamber and shoots factory ammo well above advertised velocity. Sako Super Hammerhead 180gr were getting 2899 five shot strings from it. Fired from my other 30-06, they were getting the advertised 2740 fps.

I keep 180gr Accubonds between 2800-2830 fps with several grains under book max, letting my chrono tell me my max. Took a medium sized WT deer with that load this year, he never took a step.

I love magnum rifles but will never let go of my 30-06s. Go get it.

OK.
“Don’t buy a 30-06.”
“You can only hunt with one rifle at a time.“
“There is a lot of overlap in your existing armory”

I noticed something interesting the other day. Nosler loads their 165gr Accubonds in 30-06 and 308 to the exact same velocity, 2800fps. Seems odd, you'd think they would load the 30-06 a little hotter.

More like 200fps faster with newer powders. The 308 is case limited.

It's because they don't want to be sued for customers using properly loaded 30-06 in rifles that are over a 100 years old that can't handle the pressures like today's rifles can.

It makes no sense that a 30-06 can't beat a 308 hands down when loaded to today's standards.

Ah interesting theory.

If you have a 270 WSM, the .308 and 30/06 would just be backups on an elk trip.

The 270 WSM is a A bolt M1000 eclipse. It weighs around 12 pounds scoped out.

So you have a 270 WSM and a 308 WIN, and are now considering a 30-06. At that rate, you'll have all your bases covered with 101 rifles.

I have several rifles from 22’s to smokeless muzzleloaders. They’re all a little different. Some were gifts, others just cause. I don’t own a 30-06, and wanted to hear what folks thought. It’s not really about the money or whether or not I need another rifle. But I also don’t like to buy things just for the sake of buying them. This rifle just kind of hit me the right way and if it would have been a 300 win mag, I’d have already bought it. Just wanted some opinions on the caliber primarily for elk from the guys using it.

Ah, I see.

In light of your hope for the 300 WM, I would wait until you find that right combination.

Ok so your 308 is heavy barrel...Id look into how much the 06 weighs. My savage 110 (in 30-06) is pretty light being that its synthetic stock. In comparison, my wife has a weatherby vanguard 270 that is HEAVY. I toted that thing around the mtns for her on a deer hunt and I can easily tell the difference. If you want the 06 for elk, figure out what it weighs and if it meets your expectations....grab it up.
