Taking Equity out of Home to Go on Guided Hunts

Well, I did it. I have booked all 4 sheep hunts:

Dall in NWT $36,000 2024
Stone in BC $85,000 2025
Desert in Mexico $55,000 2026
Cali bighorn in BC $120,000 2028

All outfitters have confirmed in writing there will be no changes to these costs....I am locked in per our contracts.

I am certain that by doing these hunts over the next 4 years, and paying back my loan back shortly thereafter, the math will speak for itself, and that I will be patting myself on the back in 15 years when people are still whining about how expensive sheep hunts have gotten. No telling what they will cost then. Reading everyone's 2 cents has been entertaining, regardless of if they were supportive, critical, or downright rude. The world is full of opinions and personalities, and the internet makes them much bolder than they would ever be in person. I hope you all have the courage to follow your dreams, whatever they may be, and in a way that helps you sleep best at night.

Cheers,
Horn Porn

Can’t wait to follow along!

Good for you, HornPorn. I hope you succeed beyond all words and description on your 4 upcoming sheep hunts.

You do realize that you will make the naysayers and some of the "financial advisors" extremely jealous and envious with your ambition, tenacity, and future success.

You can just hear them now, "...but, but, but..." You should have invested in this laddered, pyramid, high-interest yielding..." "You just didn't have the savings to go on some more hunts..."

"Believe the incredible and you can achieve the impossible." Archbishop Fulton Sheen. See you on the mountain. Happy hunting to all, TheGrayRider a/k/a Tom.

Look forward to hearing your recaps if you share.

Congratulations and best of luck.

OP, I’m sure you’ll enjoy the hunts, the memories and the trophies. Good luck on your hunts.

I can’t help but wonder if this is the future that the likes of Leopold, Grinnell, and Roosevelt, among others, saw when they rescued America’s wildlife from the grips of market hunting and inevitable extinction a century ago.

Pulling equity from your home to spend 300k for 4 rams.

Hunting is rotten to its core.

Curious why you chose the Cali Bighorn vs a Rocky hunt in Alberta or BC? That price is steeper than any sheep mountain.
Theres a few BC Cali outfits that consistently run 100% success on 5 day hunts. Low quota, good land access & stable sheep pop. BC/AB Bighorns range 75-95K with low success rates. I'm sure outfitters boast 50-80% success as someone else here mentioned but my guess is that number is either measured off quota and not clients taken, or measured off clients that may have had to come back multiple times. It's no secret that BC/AB BH's are a low success game compared to thinhorn sheep.

this is wild...hunters are insane

eddit : my response to this being "wild" is...I have done a lot of sports, activities, etc. over the last 25+ years as an adult...I could never imagine spending that type of money, let alone debt for any of it...but that is relative to the individual. And to me it is "insane" to spend that type of money on an activity...and that is not a judgment just an opinion. If I had major amounts of disposable income...then I would consider spending the resources. None the less...this is wild to me! And it's impressive to see a move like that. Randy Newburg once said..."you run out of time before you run out of money" So I get this...but its also insane to me. We all have different values of value.

Whether you die with a dollar or a billion dollars, you are still dead. You will not be reliving memories of house square footage, marble countertops or fancy tile floors, fancy cars, etc. as you draw your last breath.

As long as all the money you are spending and risking is yours, you don't owe anyone a damn thing. Sheep ain't my thing but if I was able to, I'd be killing a giant brown bear, moose and elk in multiple places every year.

Good on you for realizing money is a tool and only brings real pleasure when it's spent.

@2sticks and @Mojave Kid
One can believe a coarse unwise, but once the die is cast I am happy for my pessimistic self to be proven wrong and whish the person on it the best of luck. I'm of coarse assuming your wow reactions were because I had argued against it earlier in the thread.

First off, good for you for following your dreams and making it happen. I sure hope you truly love sheep hunting. It is fun, its an experience but I think sometimes it can be made out to be bigger than it really is, and the fire is only fueled by those who dream of going but are unable to do so either financially or not having been able to draw a tag.

I've got half the slam, the Cali Bighorn in my profile picture and a dall hunt I did in 2013. At the time paying $9K for the dall hunt was a ton, I'm glad I did it then as I wouldn't pay the prices they are at right now. Lord willing I'll get to chase desert sheep if I can pull a tag but I'll die a happy man regardless. In the meantime I'll chase other hunting goals and dreams.

Regardless of your dream go after it, I'm focused in one the NA Grand Slam of deer right now, that will bring me some fun adventures in some wild places in the near future.

Good for you! I’m 52 and looking back at all of the conservative decisions I made….i would have been more aggressive and taken a bit more risk if I could do it over. I hope you update the forum as you go live out your decisions. Hope you knock down four good ones and have a great time.

Dave
