Switching from pickup to jeep wrangler

We’ll I’m doing it. Selling my FX4 F150 that hardly gets driven and getting a 03 TJ that’s in really Good shape. Had the option to buy someone’s tricked out rig but I think I’ll go almost stock and try to learn along the way.

I’ve always been a trial by fire kind of person so I’ll find out if I made a mistake. Going to buy a tundra in a couple weeks so I’ll have a fall back plan if all else fails.

TJ'S are a great machine, easy to work on and tons of accessories, The first thing I do it put a nice winch on any jeep I've owned. It's a great insurance policy and cheap enough. Also they flat tow really nice. Enjoy!

Good choice. I have an 04 and it is my hunting rig. I also have a Tundra, and that rarely see's the bush. Just get yourself a hitch carrier and that eliminates the majority of the space issues. Coolers, gas cans, harvests, etc. I also pull the backseat once fall rolls around. And I've only done it once, but also easily trailerable should you need too. I get way more use out of the Jeep than I did the SxS.

Sweet set up! That’s my exact plans. Did you switch the difs and gears out right away or leave them stock?

Upgraded when the lift went on. 4:10 gears, slip yoke eliminator, Adams driveshafts, 1" Tcase drop.

I have both. Each have their place. The wrangler is my go to for hunting as it’s basically a side by side with air conditioning. Top and doors come off giving excellent visibility. These wrangler rubicons with factory diff lockers and electronic sway bar disconnect will amaze you in their off road capabilities. They are just plain impressive off road.
The 4 door with backseat out gives you enough room to sleep if needed or room to store stuff. I have a dedicated large cooler rack in the back area that I can sleep under and it stays in place. Hauls out game with no issues. Can even pull trailers as needed.

Jeeps are not reliable and that’s not why you buy them. Expect little to things to wear out on them. If you use the jeep as it’s actually intended you will need to retighten suspension monthly, keep up on maintenance, etc.

It’s just really nice having a rig that can go anywhere and get me to places that trucks will never get to. Sleeping out of it as needed and plenty of room to store stuff. It’s my favorite hunting rig I’ve used so far.

I would not replace a pickup with a Wrangler.

I have a 2011 F250 (crew cab, short bed) and a 2020 Wrangler (4-door) and am 6' 1" 250 lbs. Not big, but certainly not small. I feel cramped in the Wrangler. Both are staying, but if one had to go it'd absolutely be the Wrangler.

Still rocking my Grand Cherokee Trailhawk that I've had since trading in my F150. Great on the Highway, can get 26mpg HW, with the Air Suspension incredible off road (better than most pickups, but not a wrangler). Great overall SUV and just hit about 125K miles on it with 6 trips cross country since 2018.

But, I still hate not having a pickup. Looking at a Tundra & Topper in the spring. Maybe a F250/F350 Tremor but probably not.

I'll either keep the jeep for around town and work commutes, or sell it and buy a commuter car to have next to the truck.

Coming from someone who knows. I have a 2500HD that’s my daily. When it decides it doesn’t feel like working that week I’ll drive the Jeep. 1. It isn’t fuel efficient at all 2. In Texas heat it sucks because it never cools off inside. 3. You can’t even move out of your own way 4. It’s like a kite and just gets blown around by semi’s and wind.

I've had a wrangler my whole life. I'll be buying a truck from now on. The amount of time a truck bed would be useful is absurd. It sounds like you've thought about trailers which is good.

I could never see myself getting a jeep.
If all I was into was four wheeling, sure.
For me, I need to be able to haul deer, jet sled, tree stands, lots of stuff that needs to go into the back of a truck. Not to mention all the laughable times I’ve seen guys in jeeps at Home Depot loading bags of sod into their hilariously small back compartment. I just don’t see any practicality in them, other than off roading.

Tight trails and a little bit off road would be it. Just not a fan of space, capacity, mpg and the price of a wrangler what you get.

Jeep wranglers are cool little toys to play with but I sure wouldn't want to only have a jeep.

Now a big truck, a nice trailer, hauling your jeep to where the rough stuff starts? Now you are talking.

I actually have an old M101a2 military trailer I pull with mine for hauling stuff. Works well. Ive modded it to get rid of a bunch of weight, but still kills the mileage. I really like my jeep and use it for all that stuff but it's not ideal. As stated for a pure hunting vehicle, a pickup is a better bet IMO.
