4Runner or Half Ton Pickup?

Sorry fellas, you will never convince me the back of an SUV is more useful than a pickup bed. Whether it’s the tiny bed on my tocoma, all the way up to the 8’ bed on my f350.
Maybe not the back but with any 8-20 ft trailer problem solved.

I have a tundra and have always had trucks, but the wife’s got gx550 and had some 4 runners.

For a do everything vehicle its not even close, gx or 4 runner hands down. This will prolly be my last pickup with how much the towing capacity is increasing in the suv world and their interior layout. For hunting, fishing, camping, work on my farm a 4wd or awd suv is gunna be the ticket.

I disagree. Having to rely on loading a trailer for all hauling needs is inconvenient, at best. Additionally, you physically cannot get a trailer into every situation.

How about hauling game animals harvested? Yes, you can fold seats down in a SUV to accomplish the task. However, when I ride in anyone’s SUV who has done this, it smells like…well, a dead animal was in there.

Deer rack on the hitch solves that’s problem. I pull 10 ft to 28 ft trialers all the time. Never had an issue parking and much easier to unload. I can’t standing crawling in and outta of a bed of truck for drywall, lumber, bricks, mulch, etc. trailer is 10x easier.

I would like to see you navigate/reverse direction with your cute ute and trailer on some of the USFS roads I travel.

Why would I have a trailer pulling materials on a usfs road? I’ve killed a pile of pigs and deer in the national forest, qrt em and pack em out and throw my pack in the back of the 4 runner / gx etc.

I take my tundra down the same roads I took my Tacoma’s.

For hualing people, gear, hunting, fishing, daily life it’s gunna be extremely hard to beat a t4r or gx. They can literally do anything a truck can do and more.

Half ton crew cab pickup with canopy is about perfect for any hunting situation I’ve ever encountered.

I do see how a .223 in a rokstok driving a Subaru outback would appeal to some though

Truck. Every time I camp, travel, or move something the four runner doesn’t seem as large as it should be.

I was a jeep guy so I totally get how tempting it is to get the Four Runner. If you do, invest a grand into a decent full length roof rack.

You got the Orange TRD P … 🤨😑 edit: geez, this is from FEB. PS: I’m screwing around about the Orange; coming around to it over time. The Burnt Orange was great one year later too.

Lol
I have a white one and the in-laws have a new blue trd. That was intended as pick of a full length roof rack. The rack is a game changer and well worth the $1k+.

I’ve always liked orange though and drove a burnt orange jeep for a long time. Heck, in high school my buddy drove a burnt orange Dodge pickup that I always liked. 🙂

Hahaha! Great stuff. 🤜🤛

I have a 3rd gen 4runner and a half ton truck. Truck rarely moves except on work days and if I need to go to the dump/haul materials. My 4Runner will go almost anywhere. I hunt places now I would never have hunted if I only owned a truck. Even at 250k I trust it to run perfect every time I go out. Both is best, but if I could only have one it would be a 4runner and trailer.

We have had a bunch of 4 runners, 3rd,4th, and 5th gen’s in the family. My wife’s new gx 550 is unreal though. Makes the 5th gen feel like a dinosaur lol.

I don't think 'literally' means what you think it means.
Nice try though.

So what you’re saying is…you don’t work much. 😂

I really like the idea of the GX550, I love how they look. BUT my 2013 F150 ecoboost has overheating issues with my camper. I can't imagine another 3.5L turbo v6 is going to do any better, not considering the considerably shorter wheelbase (I have 6.5ft bed).

If I could have 2 vehicles, one would be the GX. I'll end up with a HD truck though.

No i meant literally anything a 1/2 ton can do and more, often times better in fact. Its apparent you have only driven trucks and never used an suv for truck stuff. Free country though and people can drive whatever their heart and budget desires.

What about throwing a dirt bike in the back?
How about an ATV?
How about an 8’ sheet of wood?
How do you handle a yard of gravel in the back of an SUV?
Compost, do you put that in the back of your SUV?

Did you not read my first post on this subject, trailer solves that problem when you need to get those things.

I mentioned it before I can’t stand unloading lumber, bricks, mulch, and drywall is the worst from the bed of a pick up, sucks climbing in and out and no room to walk around. I will glaldy take my 10-20 ft trailers for when materials are needed.

I’ve had an insane amount of trucks on 33-37 and honestly it just makes the bed that much more useless getting shit in and out of it.

You ever try to put a full size hog or gutted deer in the bed of a Cummins on 37s by yourself? It sucks haha.

I love my current tundra because it’s stock on 33s, but anything I’ve done in my tacos and tundra I could easily do with the wife gx550 and the 4 runners she had. Hell I pulled a boat all over the south east with the 5th gen 4Runner because the 4 runner is much better then any truck for car camping.

Right. So you can’t do the same things…without a trailer. Again, that means it can’t do as much in stock configuration, head to head, period.

What if I load stuff in the bed of a pickup and have a trailer connected loaded with stuff? The answer is…more stuff moved than an SUV.

Here’s a question: why do construction, railroad, oil, forest management, etc. companies or agencies use pickup trucks in their fleet? Because SUVs are for hauling people and cannot do what pick up trucks can do.

I don’t hate SUVs, but you guys can’t convince me they’re more useful.
