There are already threads addressing the difficulty in setting the 3-9 diopter so that both the reticle and image are clear. While I still have non-perfect image quality at distance, this thread is not about that.

This thread is about whether or not the reticle loses zero when you adjust the diopter? I have used the 3-9 for several seasons now, and my gun has never lost zero. While playing with the diopter the other day, I noticed that the reticle moves around with the eyepiece I.e. if the lock ring is not snug, and you move the eyepiece vertically or horizontally, the reticle moves accordingly.

I have yet to shoot the gun since playing with it, but does the reticle “return” to place once the lock ring is tightened, or is there a chance that you will lose zero just by fussing with the diopter?

Threads themselves are tapered, so I’d like to think that loading the threads with pressure from the lock ring re-centers the eyepiece, but I have not tested it yet.

For the record, after setting my 6x, I have perfect image quality so long as parallax is set. This alone leads me to thinking the 3-15 might be my next purchase rather than another 3-9.

Any experience on this out there? @Formidilosus

Thanks!

It is FFP- the recipe and image is moving together. I less something is wrong, it doesn’t effect zero.

I thought I remembered watching just the reticle move, while the object in view stayed put. But, I just checked on bipod and bag, and you are right, whole image moves. Thank you.

It's been a couple years since I've used one, but when I had one I adjusted the diopter a few times while shooting out to 650 and it didn't seem to impact my zero, but I never tested it at 100 with larger round count groups
