Bumping an old thread
Anybody have any more experience with the 85 vs the 95 with the btx? It seems to maybe make sense that the 85 at 30x could possibly have a better image than the 95 at 35x. And the larger exit pupil of the 85 should aid the 85 as well.
I would think the 95 would be better at more distant viewing, but is the 85 as good or better at scanning and locating game because of the larger field of view and exit pupil? Is the biggest difference simply a 30x vs a 35x view? Or is the 95 better in every way except weight?
You pretty much nailed it. I’ve spent a TON of time behind the BTX with 85/95 and optically they’re both awesome. The 95 resolution and magnification does help you see more detail and it is better for long range glassing.
This holds true until light fades, then the 85 and 95 come back together and the 85 might actually get you a couple extra minutes of productive glassing. Neither of them are twilight superstars though. You would need the 115 mm Objective to make big gains there.
For smaller country and picking apart a single hillside or basin, the wider FOV of the 85 helps you cover the country more efficiently when it’s closer. With either one, you’re going to want to glass it well with binos on a tripod first because your locked into a pretty narrow field of view either way.
The 85 is more backpack friendly and I attribute that to it’s size rather than the added ounces. I’ve still hauled the BTX-95 all over hell and back - I pack the right objective based on the country I’m glassing. However, you will think to yourself - “Damn that’s a big package!” - when you’re shoving that objective in a low side pocket and strapping it down clear up by the lid of the pack too.
I don’t see myself hauling the 115 objective on many overnight - remote backpack excursions, but it will get lugged to a lot of more accessible glassing points within a mile or two when the situation warrants.
