I'm looking at purchasing some Superdown pants but thought maybe the 210's and 145's (can get them both for basically the same price as the SD's) might be a better way to go? I was thinking I would use the SD's under my Guide pants in the late season stand Hunting and as a glassing layer in the back country under my attacks in the spring and fall for bears.what would you go with???

Just FYI, the 210 zip offs are extremely tight fitting...great for putting on without taking boots off, but first time you put them on you will swear that they are sized wrong. I've never used super down pants.

I have never needed an insulating layer under my pants while hiking at least too minus 15 or so.I have the superdown pants for when i stop for a period long enough to cool down then i slip them on and nice and warm while glassing or resting.YMMV also i find merino heavy.

After experiencing what marshmstr described with the 210 I tried the 145 and I'm hooked on having them in my duffel - being able to quickly take them off when they're no longer needed is genius - I would think the down pants would shine for glassing sessions when it's cold in a totally different way over lightweight long underwear

I would go with the super downs. I found the 210's and 145's weren't warm enough for glassing or sitting in a stand (at least for me anyway).

They really are two different creatures. One is a baselayer system for moisture/smell management and light insulation. The other is specifically designed for insulation/keeping warm. You can't move too much in the superdown- too warm. I think having the 145's AND the superdown would cover pretty much everything you'd face, but I recognize that it may not be feasible in terms of finances. The 145's plus the 210's would not be as warm as the superdown alone, so if you need warmth on the stand or for glassing, go with the superdown. It would be very wise to have some baselayer bottoms at some point though.

Thanks guys, I purchased the Superdown pants. I have some ice breaker merino bottoms and also under armor for bases. But I do want to get some 145's. Untill then I feel pretty good about my gear list now. Got a Guide jacket(need to sell or trade for an XL) Guide pants,Attack pants, and Superdown Jacket and pants. Now I need some merino tops for early season.
