For many years I've wanted to fish for large sturgeon and I'm beginning to organize a trip for myself and 5 other buddies somewhere in Western USA. I will be flying from the Mid-West and would like to do 3 days worth of fishing. I'm a novice when it comes to sturgeon fishing and any guidance would be appreciated. I've been researching the Hells Canyon area because I have heard about the wildlife in this area and also being known for large sturgeon. I'm open to other locations if it makes logistics simpler (near by airports, lodging, river near by) and provides a similar fishing experience. I've heard that Spring (April-May) is the prime time to fish this area? I'd love any fishing charter suggestions if people have had success. Fishing is fishing, but what is the typical success rate of getting a sturgeon to the boat? Any information is appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Reel Time out of Clarkston, WA. Ask for a trip with Jeff. He’s fishy as hell and could catch sturgeon in a toilet bowl.

Jeff Wieber (1-208-816-2588) is a fantastic guide. We fished with him on the Snake in Hell’s Canyon and had a fantastic trip. We stayed in Riggins and made the drive over to Pittsburgh Landing to meet Jeff. He may have other lodging recommendations that’d be closer. I’d definitely fish with him again.

We fished the mouth of Hell's Canyon a few years for salmon and sturgeon. The sturgeon we caught were about 7'.

We flew into Spokane and stayed in Lewiston. You could also camp at the boat ramp if you're into rotting fish smell.

Part of that depends on what you are looking for. im mostly familiar with the Columbia and not so much the Snake. the fishing for Oversized in the summer can be very active and a lot of fun... You hook onto and fight a 7 footer, ..its an experience. But in most fisheries you cant keep them. Most keepers are allowed in the winter early spring months and use a Slot limit 38 inch to 54 inch. Later is better but you run the risk of the quota being filled. There are two rules to catching sturgeon, you have to have bait and you have to be on the bottom. if you arent getting bites, then check those two things

....and if you've got those two things covered then move.
