Stone Glacier Sky packs 2014

Great video,it explained a lot of questions I had. I will definitely be picking up one of these soon. I like the idea of a sheep pack but being able to convert it to a smaller bag for short 2 to 3 day alpine hunts.

I'll be keeping the Barney bag for moose hunts though!

JWP58 - Schnee's in Bozeman is the only retailer of the packs, but we will be at the Wild Sheep show in Reno and SCI in Las Vegas if you happen to be attending.

Hammer - Yes, there will multiple belt sizes available this spring. I do not have a specific date yet, but I would estimate mid April at this point. Thanks for your input, feedback like I have read in your previous posts helps guide the direction of our products.

As for the packs.. They look pretty darn good! It is the year for new packs! Lots of new options out there!

A co-worker of mine has an SG Solo and absolutely loves it. I have seen his and it feels great and rides well (though i have no tried any other high-end pack).

They carry great in my limited animal pack out of one deer.

If I didn't run a Kifaru or if Kifaru didn't work for my body type, I would have no problem using a Stone Glacier. The Stone Glacier frame I found very comfortable and they have now fixed the one thing I would have liked to see different on the version of their pack I had. A 3 piece hip belt with power pulls. I find that more comfy than a full wrap, but everyone has different preferences of course. Can't go wrong with them from what little I've used it.

They carry well, and the three piece belt will be an improvement for people who prefer that style.

IMO-They carry great for me. I did use the lumbar pad option on my Solo because it carried better for me than the wrap belt.

But the 3 piece is to me an improvement. It looks good so far. I am hoping on really testing it out this weekend on a quick winter trip. Planning on 1-2 nights of snowshoeing in.

Gibson - We are currently assembling packs and they will start shipping tomorrow. We are hoping to have all pre-orders shipped by Friday. Depending on your location, I would anticipate you will receive your pack by mid-next week (UPS ground is usually around 3 days.)

- What was the thought process on not having any small to medium sized external pockets for quick access gear?

I often find myself digging for a few repetitive items daily during hikes, etc.

Jdog – With the minimalist philosophy it seems there is always that balance between function and convenience. What is an absolute necessity and what is just nice to have, of course all subject to personal preference and hunting style. Pocket organization has seemed to fall into this category when designing, what features are to be added at the cost of ounces. While most of my designs definitely fall into the minimalist category, the Sky packs offer a few more options for accessible pockets and cubic inches as you have mentioned. The lid is 500 cubic of quick access and there are 4 pockets accessible by opening the one center zip. These I designed to be areas for those necessities while on the trail so you don’t have to dig through the pack. I try to stay with a sleek profile without the external pockets to hang up on brush and gather moisture/snow, which I have found a nuisance in alders and late season weather. This being said, I am always open to customer ideas and preferences as that is how many of the features of the new Sky bags came about. There is always room for improvement and advancing designs to meet customer's needs.

I used a Terminus pack modified with a long side zip all last spring/summer. Kind of an primitive early version of the Sky series in function that way. GPS, Rangefinder, hat, and a few other small things went in the lid, jacket/gloves went in the top of the bag, and spotter, that days food, and my ditty bag were usually loaded near the zipper. Those are basically all the things I access during the day and it worked very well for me. Since I often do a fair amount of brush crashing, I appreciate the "slick" pack bag for my uses.

When in "bivy" mode, clearly that easy access will be more limited. Personally, I expect I to pretty well leave the top lid on all the time, even with the bag shrunk down.
