It was the same in Tucson when they opened. Not so good anymore. BP is supposed to be building a store in Tucson, to bad it is not a Sheels.
Sad to see for me. 20 years ago, I remember opening the first SW in Arizona. The place was mystical and was insanely busy. Like everything else, the small store feeling has left and they now go to the cookie cutter, one size fits all mentality. It is depressing to go in that store now and see that it's the same crap on every aisle. It is quite crazy to me to think that they have went this direction. BPS is absolute shit and should be really easy to beat when it comes to local sales. I too, think that SW will be a thing of the past within 10 years.

Great customer service at my local SW, they are genuinely great and knowledgeable people at the gun counter, probably because I am usually one of four customers in the whole store.

I worked part time at SW for about a year back in 2022. I’ve never worked retail in my whole life. They would send us stuff that wouldn’t sell period. I live in WY and it’s not legal to bait. We got a bunch of deer bait stuff. A lot of the workers are clueless. My gut tells me they’re going out of business. Our local store has nothing. I spend my funds online or other stores.
Was the store you worked at in Sheridan, WY?

That place has gone down hill with inventory over the last year or so.

Sportsman’s in Carson City is not impressive. Seems like every time I go in there for a no brainer item they don’t have it. I lost my quail call last week and stopped in there today to try and pick up a new one. Found this but no valley quail call.

SW in central OR seems well stocked with everything gun and hunt related, so I’m assuming the rest of the place has inventory. If I can walk in, buy a rifle, reloading components and/or the ammo of my choice for the gun I just bought…I’m happy.
I think plenty around here would be disappointed if they folded, but not get that vibe here.

We have a Sportsman's and Scheels on the same road, approximately two miles apart. Scheels is always packed, Sportsman's is always deserted. Every time I go in there, I wonder how they can be turning a profit.

I do like going in there because no one asks me if they can help me find anything and you can just putz around browsing. It is annoying when you ask an employee about finding something, they don't know/care, and you find it yourself.

Ah... Yes.

The species specific quail call. What serious outdoorsman doesn't have one of these "no brainer" items? 😆

Seriously though, what do you actually use it for? Locator???

Well, bobwhites are not found anywhere around here and calls for valley quail are a pretty common item. Yes, the calls work well for locating them.

Our local sportsmans is a joke. Corporate manages what they stock so we have a bunch of useless stuff on the shelves. The one I went to in Bozeman kicked the shit out of ours, but it paled in comparison to the Scheels in Missoula. I would love if we got a Scheels. That place is nuts!

Same in Las Vegas. Went in to look for a call for my cousin, only had bobwhite. What's funny is my buddy who just started hunting showed up with one. Still think i heard him try to use it.

I've had pretty good luck with sportsmans here in Chico. yah the guys at the gun counter can be a little too yahooo'ish. But what gun counter isn't like that? I know that like everywhere else in the country there are still supply chain issues. For the most part they carry pretty damn good products, price is fair and the people who work there are reasonably knowledgeable.

as a side note... I hunt a ton of quail and had no idea a valley quail call was even a thing... learn something new every day.

We have gambel down here, but i think they sound the same. I use mine for when they're busted up. If you give them a little bit of time, they'll start calling and you can call in the younger birds that just want to be back in the covey. It's honestly pretty fun.

i do it with mountain quail just using my own whistle with my mouth all the time. i can shoot up a covey, move a hundred yards up hill and call them right back to me. They are a pretty stupid bird so early in the year its almost too easy.

A fun sportsmans story: One time I tried to buy a duck call out of the glass case in front of the shotgun counter. When the employee couldnt round up the keys to unlock the case he told me "these calls (that had price tags on them) are not for sale, If we have them in stock they'll be in the aisle where the other calls are." I assured him that the calls were in fact for sale because I had seen people buy from the case in the past. And that I had looked at the aisle of calls and these specific calls were not displayed there because these ones are higher end. He said hed be right back and walked off.. after a uncomfortably long time he never returned, so I went to another employee and asked him If he knew where the other guy went. he said "oh chris? he went home..."

I hunt mountain quail
They don’t make a mountain quail call so you have to blow the valley and bobwhite simultaneously

It is funny, I found a bob white on you tube while I was standing in the store to see if they sounded like a valley quail and it’s not even close. You could pick up one of the scoped muzzy packages they have to use on an NV bobwhite hunt.
