Socks that fit

I feel like I am going crazy trying to find a sock that fits without being too tight around the upper ankle/calf. I have tried all kind of different socks and have realized I have to order a size up (I am a size 12) because they all shrink after washing. But I feel like maybe I need to go even bigger which some places don’t even make socks that big. Darn tough are about the best I have found if I order a size up but just got some new ones and they are already tight after a couple washes. I am 6’2 and 160 lbs with skinny chicken legs so I don’t feel like socks should be tight on me. I do hike hundreds of miles a year in steep mountains and therefore have athletic calves but still I shouldn’t struggle this much to find a sock that fits. Anybody else in a similar situation or am I actually going crazy lol?

I have been wearing Darn Tough socks for many years now. I wear their socks for all applications, and I feel like I own the whole range at this point. They aren't cheap, but the are comfortable, and they last forever.

Got them thicc ankles ol son?

Darn tough is what I've been rocking for a while. Hard to beat their warranty too. I tried some of the alpaca stuff and they wore through very quickly.

You must have sensitive legs. I’ve been wearing darn tough for years and have cankles and calf’s look like footballs. I also have small feet and get med or small over the calf socks from darn tough and they work great for me.

As many others have stated: Darn Tough. Best all around sock I’ve come across. Doesn’t have to be JUST worn on hikes or hunts, either. It’s super comfortable to wear as an every day sock, too.

I have Darn's and Hollows.. The Hollows are comfy and stay up but i'm skeptical about how long they're going to hold up. I've had them about 3 months. I'll have a better feelign about them in 6 months

Darn tough are terrible for me, it's like trying to put on a latex glove they get so damn tight after washing!

Smartwool still work best for me but don't seem to last long anymore!

I like Killik which is Sportsman's Warehouse brand. Always fit well and I wear a size 14 shoe.

I wear a 14, and I think I can wash new socks once. I can't dry them. I am talking about the $20-30 wool socks from anyone. Darn Tough, whatever doesn't matter. They shink too much.

The synthetic socks from Under Amor used to last years, and now last 2-3 wears.

I need a new option for the big foot gentlemen.

You know what they say big feet,

probably a guy that trips a lot.

Yeah that’s my problem they shrink so much. I order a size too big from darn tough and they are too big new but too small and tight after a few washes. I can wear them still but I have a ring around my ankle/calf at the end of the day. I guess I should try their XXL which would be 2 sizes too big for my size 12 and see where that gets me. Kind of tough for you being a 14, most places don’t make much bigger than that

Give the Mongolian mongulai store camel or yak wool socks a try. They take forever to get to the US but they flat perform. Darn Tough is way down my personal list and I don’t own any after previously having 10 or so pairs.
The mongulai are not a technical fit but perform excellent and the cuff is nice and loose but stays up.
Anyone I order a pair for swears by them in the heat or the cold. Thank Form

The Mongulai socks wore through in about 8 months for me. Wore them almost daily for work though. They made my feet sweat a lot, which happens with merino too.

OP - what type of Darn Tough's have you tried? I wear the Stride Micro Crew Ultra-Lightweight Running Sock (Style 1036) with injiji synthetic liners in 8" Timberlines. Got pretty thick calves and that combo works well. Cuff of the boot is just below where my calves start to get thick and that sock pairing stays in place well without irritating my calves.

As mentioned above, liner is important to avoid blisters, I have good experience with Kuiu, point6 and Darn

Ive been looking at the wide open

Which are made by darn tough and have similar guarantees. Darn toughs are tight around the front of my ankles even in an xl.

You're not crazy, I have the same issue. Size 12, 6'3, 200lbs, and not a hint of a cankle. But every pair of socks gets really tight across the top of my foot where it meets the ankle after a few washes. Lmk if you find the magic sock, because I haven't.
