I’m taking my 5 year old son to the BWCA towards the end of June. Unfortunately, they just put a fire ban in place through the end of the month so cooking over a campfire is not an option. Hopefully it’s rescinded early but as for now I’m planning that it will be in place. I have an MSR Pocket Rocket and am curious how you guys have cooked fish on similar stoves (primarily bass and walleye). Thanks!

Not a pocket rocket, but I did some fish in a small msr skillet on a wind burner.

If I were you I’d pack some oil and a liquid fuel stove like an msr dragonfly along with a small skillet.

You’ll be fine with the pocket rocket and a lightweight skillet. You may have to cut the fish in pieces to fit.

Have you had a problem with the flame being too hot or concentrated? I’ve read that’s an issue. I just caught a few bluegills this morning, may have to give it a try on them.

No. As long as the fillets aren't too thick it's fine. Flour, salt, pepper, oil and you should be good to go. You could take a small cast iron skillet to even the heat a little more assuming you don't have to portage much. I would want to build a rock support though. I wouldn't trust the pocket rocket to balance/hold up a cast iron skillet as well.

I have had issues with the heat being a little too much. I pack an aluminum disk in cut from some sheet and it cools it down some, resting the skillet on the disk, on the flame. Or have propped the skillet above the flame when I didn't have the disk.
