If you can’t use OnX as many have recommended, I like the Garmin InReach. It allows messaging from GPS to GPS or you can communicate with people back home on their cell phones via text.
For durability and reliability as far as a gps goes, hands down I’d recommend the Garmin 60CSX if it were still available. The one I own has NEVER failed to get a signal where other gps’s I’ve used and others friends have used, have failed. Definitely a blue collar unit! Currently I use my phone with either GAIA or OnX. OnX most of the time. That being said, my truck and my camp and when I get lucky, my animal is marked on my Garmin. Cell phones batteries die, glitches in software happen. That Garmin is my piece of mind.
I’m going to be running onx this year. It is more expensive that others but you can get it for like 15 bucks on Camofire.com. It should be on there about once a weekish.
