Hawaii goat hunt

Hunting in Hawaii was/is alot like the stuff you heard about back in the 90s that surfers dealt with. Its about respect, and who you know. There was a famous "Uncle" that used to vouch for guys and you could get into some great hunting on your own. The locals seemed to own the island, so as long as you had their blessing, you were good. I do have a couple stories of running into some locals that didn't get the message from "uncle" and lets just say, my hunting plans that day were cancelled.

On a side note, anyone been on the north shore lately, and seen the house just before laniakea beach with tons of axis deer horns superbly displayed on the garage and side of house, no less than 25 easy. I'd like to get to know that guy, wow, some tremendous Axis deer, boar jaws on display.

I actually just saw a guy sitting in his marked DLNR truck parked in a turnout just outside of a designated access point for a hunting area. I was actually shocked to see a DLNR employee out in the field! I was just out scouting and knew the area was only open on weekends and it was a Thursday. I walked up to him to say hi. His first words were “Da gates open brah, go right ahead.” I said, well “wait, this unit is only open on weekends.” He just looked at me funny and chuckled, “Bradda. Gate open. You wanna hunt, you just go hunt.” Even he was clueless, or didn’t care.

It’s Hawaii. It’s the Wild West.

Another story…

I was in a Foodland grocery store just after dark after hunting all day. I was dressed in camo. Store was pretty crowded. Some guy sees me way down at the end of the aisle like 50-60’ away and shouts “Hey Brah. You headed out? Gonna get da boars?”

“No, man, we just got back. Shot a couple goats”

“Right on Brah. We’re just loading up with beer and grinds and gonna head out in a few minutes.” He shouts.

Night hunting is technically illegal in HI. Nobody cares.

That's been my take. There are rules on paper, and rules of the islands. The island rules supersede what's on paper by a long shot.
