Haven't posted in a while, figured I'd share this here
Mr Zinke-
First of all, I genuinely hope this small voice reaches you. Sincerely. I didn't know how else to reach out to you, so I did it this way. Hope it works.
I am one of the many people you spoke to on your initial run for office. I'm the FlightMedic who challenged you back then to stand up for guys like me. I doubt you remember me, you must have been walked through 50 doors that day and shook 500 hands. But you looked me in the eye and made a promise. To me. Man to man. We shook hands.
The Montana way is just that simple... A man says what he means and does what he says. You well know how far bullshit goes here.
You promised me that you would never give an inch of our public land to anyone, that you would "make sure our children have the same opportunities we had."
Do you remember saying that? Did you mean it?
I don't like asking for anything, at all. Its not in my nature. This is the first, and probably last, time I'll ever do something like this. But im choking down my pride and asking you for something. I'm asking you to keep your word.
A man is as good as his word, or he ain't good for nothing.
We were both raised on these values, and I'm counting on you to be good for your word.
Don't give an inch, ever. Don't get caught up in partisan politics, don't deny the young men and women of this country the experience we both got to have.*
You are in a position to become a legend here sir. Nobody liked Teddy Roosevelt when he was doing what he was doing, certainly not the "capitalist contingent". But today we all hold him in very high regard. We venerate the man.
You said that you were caste in his mold.
So, once again, I challenge you to do the right thing.
I'm sure the pressures upon you are great, and the short game will always be the easy game.
I challenge you to do the hard thing, the thing that every country boy was taught to do. The right thing, wether folks are looking or not. Especially when they aren't looking.
Be bold, be brave, be a rock. Make Montana proud. Make America proud. Write your name upon History.
As a former NPS Officer I would have been very proud to serve under a man like that.
I challenge you to preserve our national legacy. I challenge you to look into both of our grandchildren's eyes and explain what you did way back when you had a voice.
This is your chance to really make a difference. This is not only your legacy, this is the legacy of your great great grandbabies.
This is your time, this is your moment. This is how history will remember you.
Please, make Montana proud. Make the world know that we raise our sons right before we send them out into the world.
Do the right thing sir. Give no ground. We shook hands on it. Your word either means something or it doesn't, the Montana way
