So, how light can a Kimber Hunter be? A build thread.

My .308 and .243 I had cut/crowned to 19", this one I went with 18" as I'm hoping to add a lightweight suppressor in the not too distant future.
One of the best improvements to a Kimber is chopping the barrel and adding a suppressor to shift balance forward. My biggest complaint was how butt heavy (and thus muzzle light) they are in factory form. On my 6.5 CM Montana, I chopped the barrel at 16.5 and added a Banish Backcountry. It now hangs on target much better.

I picked up this Kimber pro blak in 308 that I can’t wait to try out. I ordered a 2-10x56 accupoint and a set of warne mountain tech rings for it. Not really sure what kind of accuracy to expect, I have heard mixed reviews.

Got mine out to the range today to sight it in: was pretty happy with the accuracy. Took it to the 200-500 yard range and was consistently banging steel.

Sub 6lbs scoped and suppressed is doable. This was my 18 inch kimber 22CM build this spring. Bare rifle about 3.75lbs. Shown with nxs 2.5-10x42 and scythe-ti. Picture with gong is the group at 400 yards using "factory" coppercreek ammo. 80eldx 3260fps. Butt stock is "quick detach" so it fits inside my pack.

This is a really fun thread. If I wasn't so brainwashed by rokslide into only using tikkas I'd have to dive into one of these!

I'm curious,... Does anyone know of this being done with a Tikka? I wonder how light I could make one of mine. I think my factory stock is dying to be turned into swiss cheese haha
I was able to get a factory tikka superlite 6.5cm barreled action down to 55oz or so. With a modified mdt-hnt26 folder stock, it is around 4lbs 13oz bare rifle.

factory superlite barrel cut to 16in, bolt fluted by LRI (xpattern deep), Ti bolt knob, ti mag release, ti trigger screw, etc.

Did that include the action lightening cuts like UM does?

Sweet set up. How has your experience been with that scope?

I have very little experience with it. I've had it for a year or two but just mounted for the first time the other day. Zeroing went as expected, scope adjusted correctly, that's about all I can say at this point. This is the 5.56 BDC reticle. I adjusted the magnification so the 300 yard subtension aligns with my dope (this is a .308 Win). What I settled on was 5.5x with my zero 2" high at 100 yards. I taped the magnification ring so it's now a fixed 5.5x scope. Seems like a very simple setup. Hold right on from 50-200 yards, 300 yard subtension if I need it, and I don't think I'll be temped to shoot much past that with this setup. I'm going to shoot it a little more and then do a thread about it if it continues to work as expected.

Nope, but it would be cool if someone knows how much the UM lightening cuts take off.

Around 4oz, including bolt fluting

That's interesting. I got nearly that much from just bolt mods alone (x pattern from LRI, and mtn nob).

I actually just bought a leupold backcountry rail for the 300wm since it was on sale for like 22 dollars. I was thinking I’d put warne mountain tech rings on it and just eat the weight since it’s still going to just be a hair over 8lbs with the rail/rings and trijicon tenmile 3-18. Not the lightest rifle out there but it’s a 300 win mag so it dosent really need to be.

My Montana 308 is like 5lb 9oz with talley lightweights, leupold 2.5-8x38, titanium bolt handle and the barrel has been shortened to 18” and threaded for 5/8x24. I do plan on getting a hunter in 6.5 and doing all the tricks to it to get it as light as possible.
How does the 308 shoot with the 18”.

I’m with ya on a tricked out hunter and a short barrel (18) and a light suppressor.

Well the 308 has been awesome. I probably shot 10 animals with it in the last 5-6 years. It’s my go to for black tail and really any time I’m hiking a lot.

I'd recommend 16" for 300 to maybe 400 yards depending on your optics. I killed 7 elk with my factory length one out to just over 400, Barnes 150 ttsx, no losses and the the furthest one went 100 yards, but he was a jazzed up herd bull. Loving my 16" 223 even more...

If I did it again I’d get 16, but I already got it cut to 18” and threaded for 5/8x24 so I’m not going to send it in again to get cut 2 more inches.
