SO DST tarp pitches

New DST?

So this DST looks a little different than the others. . and I love it. Dyneema. Ultra lightweight. And an epic shelter. Tested in my backyard, Banff and the Frank Church. It now has a permanent home (replacing the Sil DST) in my pack for all solo and day-trip adventures.

Final scale weight as packed was 11.5 oz (shelter, seam sealer, lines, stakes). I dumped the stuff sack and just rolled it up and wrapped the guy lines around it.

What do you think, should Seek Outside start producing these in bulk?

I would guess one of the biggest deterrents to demand would be cost. They are expensive to make, and it seems most consumers are unwilling to pay so much extra, when silnylon is usually, light enough.

As for myself, I would not get it unless it came with panel guyouts, in addition to the center patch. Panel guyouts are the only thing lackning from the silnylon DST, IMO.

The price of Dyneema is problematic.. I have a couple triangular panels coming in today, with the intended purpose of closing off the back of the tarp if I have the canine unit along. Won't provide complete weather protection if it,s gets nasty, but will give a little leeway, make it easier to keep gear dry..
Which, unfortunately adds weight. And a light and fast shelter being part of the draw for the DST..
Gotta say though, if they did start selling em, I would be mighty tempted to get one past the domestic commander!..

Sort of. I’d been hounding them about Dyneema options starting in 2016. KT and I have corresponded several times about it... mostly talking ideas. The whole SO team all knew I loved the DST (in addition to all the other SO stuff I own)... so they asked if I wouldn’t mind testing something new. Then this showed up.

I can confirm, however, that they have done some custom work for customers.

Dyneema would be interesting.... Would be the only way for me to have all the features I want and still keep the weight reasonable enough to be using a tarp... But dang, are they spendy!!

What size is this tarp of yours? Standard DST size? Looks nice!

It’s slightly smaller than the Syl DST. I think 9x9 or 9.5x9.5’.

First attempt at rigging the two triangular panels..looks a little ungainly, and it is an open seam between the tarp and panels.
Time will tell if is worth the hassle, but the intended purpose is mostly get some cover over the canine, who gets a little anxious in an open tarp. And secondary as a little gear porch.

Did a few mock ups and ran the tape, sent a rough draft of what I was after to Bear Paw.

Would pitching in a modified A-frame then folding the forward stake points in be enough coverage? Reference the photos in post #9 of this thread? Makes for a pretty darn secure shelter.

Running solo, doing it that way would be lighter, and probably better weather protection. I,ve got the hairball idea to use the tarp on some of the rougher, more vertical trails with the Missus and the canine in tow. Size wise, the Cimarron is just right for the 3 of us. Tryna cut some weight, running the DST and the nest, pretty snug, little tougher access. The panels add minimal weight. I will admit, as I keep getting a little farther along in this project, start pondering the idea that a Dyneema tipi might be a path of lesser resistance. At least in regards to dropping weight AND getting the extra room.
But a lot more expensive.
Set up in the back yard last night, just me and Max the Dog, wasn't too bad. No extra condensation, and with the canine walled in with the panels, the dog seemed a lot more relaxed and I wasn't near as worried about him wandering off.

Did you ever get that lbo nest and get it setup with your dst?

I talked to Seek Outside today, they recommended the LBO nest for my DST. I will be getting one hopefully before to much longer.
