Snakes in the yard

Peacocks supposedly. Guinea fowl too. Both are obnoxious but beat copperheads on the porch.

Possibly some geese breeds but an aggressive goose is not a good pet (although tasty if it doesn’t work out).

Venomous snakes or regular snakes? If you are worried about venomous snakes then don’t kill the king snakes.

If you are worried about regular snakes, then stop worrying about regular snakes.

Otherwise get cats.
Copperheads and water moccasins mainly. I try not to kill regular snakes.

I have a cat which is partly why I’m worried about it. She had this one cornered up in the backyard yesterday.

Nothing worse than a toxic snake…. So much narcissism….

I’m a live and let live guy for all non venomous snakes. They are probably better for your environment than you are, they do absolutely no harm, control pests etc. Rattler in the yard will get killed, rattler in his yard will get left alone.

Are cottonmouths and copperheads aggressive? Rattlers are not, and 95% of people who get bit by one were fxxkin with it.

Same here. I don't kill snakes or anything I don't plan to eat.

Copperheads are extremely docile. Cotton mouth aren't usually hanging around unless it's a moist area. Unless you step on one it's unlikely you'd get bit. But venemous snakes are a threat to dogs, so I don't judge homeowners getting rid of them. And safest method for we mere mortals is lead.

I grab all the gopher snakes and throw them in the barn, they love rattlesnake eggs and pack rats. Coolest thing I found in the Mare motel was a gopher snake skeleton with a rattlesnake skeleton in it's mouth. must have bit on the way down. Keep rodents away as much as possible ,no food no need to hang out. We had two neighbors with dogs got hit last summer $7000 for anti-venom. It pays to keep a watchful eye for sure.

Anyone saving skins (or frozen whole snakes, minus the heads) from copperheads and/or rattlers, hit me up. I'll take 'em off your hands. Guilty/nuisance snakes only, please.

You guys saying chickens. Aren't the attracted to the chicken eggs? Our CFO used to live in Alabama and had a pool in her backyard. She said you put golf balls out around the edges of the yard so snakes think they're eggs and swallow them.

That’s the problem with copperheads, they blend in so well and are so docile that you can easily step on one. You don’t pick up that little movement when close like with other snakes because they won’t move.

Copperheads have perfect camo in mulched gardens or flower beds. They are the only snake that doesn't get a pass around my house

Has anyone priced anti-venom?
Hunting buddy got nailed on the ankle by a copperhead while turning off a garden hose. Leg turned black and blue up to his hip.

I rarely see a snake and I live on lake with USACE property all around. When I first moved in I had a few cooperheads, rat snakes, various water snakes and even a king snake. Owls and hawks moved in as well as an outdoor cat showed up. We have not had a snake in years.

They sell chemicals to spread on your property to deter snakes. (Google search)

Or you can try an organic method. I would think you would need to reapply when it wears away or washes away from the rain..

(From the internet).. Natural Snake Repellents:
Sulfur:
Sulfur is a natural repellent that irritates snakes' skin, making them less likely to return to areas treated with it.
(From the internet)..

Lime:
Lime mixed with hot pepper or peppermint oil can also act as a repellent when applied around the perimeter of your property.

Essential oils:
Clove, cinnamon, cedarwood, and peppermint oils are known to deter snakes, and can be used in homemade sprays or mixed with water to deter snakes.

Other natural options:
Garlic, onions, and other pungent ingredients can also be used in homemade sprays or scattered around your property.

And they recommend keeping your grass mowed/ short.

Some people swear moth balls keep them away.

Issue is snakes don’t breathe like we do. They smell by licking things so you almost have to make a solid line of mothballs to block them out of an area.

We kill several rattlers in our yard annually.
I wish there was something to do to keep them away… but there is nothing.
We keep it mowed pretty short to fifty yards from the house
Truth. My daughter came in a few years ago talking about the cat had a snake. My wife and I both figured it was some garter snake. We step off the back porch and find the cat boping a prairie rattler in the head.

Made a decent meal though. View attachment 869582
Ewwww… who would eat a snake… after a cat slobbered on it. 😁
