Big ol hawk flew into a tree and was eying my 18# dog up....wonder if a hawk can take a dog that size away?

Well my buddy started falconry about a year ago. He has a goshawk and stopped by to tell me his bird took a wild turkey down while it was in flight. I looked at the bird perched in his truck and it was hard to believe since that goshawk isn't a real big bird. Hope your pal stays safe.

Can a hawk pick up a 12 lb dog?

The answer is: no. No hawk can carry off a 12-pound pet. No hawk can carry off a 3-pound pet. The largest hawk in North America (the Ferruginous Hawk) weighs at most four pounds, so leaving the ground carrying three – let alone twelve – would be aerodynamically (not to mention logically) impossible.Mar 25, 2016

One has a perch on the border of my yard , sits there and watches my 65lbs pup , not scared of him at all . I love seeing the big birds of prey .

I don't know if I'd be worried about it carrying anything off. I would be worried about it trying to attack though. I've had hawks attack chickens. It's never tried to fly away with one. It lands on them, pins them down and rips them up.

Maybe he is thinking the pup looks like a good meal? Hawk hurts my pup and that hawk is a dead hawk.....he may have an accident for just thinking about it...

Roger that on the dead Hawk ! Down here we have Bufo Toads , they secrete a poison that can kill a dog . I chased this one out of the garage last week , it started oozing poison , right before it got point of my shovel .

I appreciate the info, I had no idea what they weighed. That hawk looked pretty friggin big to me....maybe he was some zoo/pet escapee... :)

I have a patterjack terrier, he is a bug killer....small animal killer to be.....he has an application in for Dog Team 6.....

Start training him for squirrel soon....and plan to trap coons starting as soon as season opens.....

My neighbor had a family of chicken hawks nest in one of their cottonwoods a couple years ago. Those little bastards would divebomb my 85# lab in our backyard.

A juvenile bald eagle dove on my my sister in our front yard when she was just starting to walk. It flared off the attack at the last moment and landed beside her, it seemed to be sizing her up when my parents ran out and scared it away.

Also had a red tailed hawk attack a guinea hen in the front yard a number of years later, but the guinea hen managed to escape death. Still not sure how. The hawk seemed much larger than the guinea, but didn't stick around to get weighed.

So, with a hungry bird of prey, no telling what they might try, or when.
