I'm looking to upgrade my pad this winter, I've been running a thermarest prolite and was looking at an exped syn or downmat. I'm pretty shocked how heavy they are compared to some others on the market. What are you guys running, lows are in the teens for me and it must be available in a wide.

Did you look at the ul9 synmat ? I have it and I'm super happy with it. It's not getting replaced in my kit for next year.

I'm one of the crazy guys who pack the exped downmat, a long wide too boot. The extra weight is worth a good night sleep.

Same here, match with an EE quilt and yer good to go. It's long, wide, thick and hot...just like me. :)

I ended up now carrying my Exped downmat ul7 long wide as my all season pad. Warm and comfy. I had exped ul synmat 7 and got cold in winter months. Before that had the thermarest potato chip bag one. I debated on doing the Xtherm, but each time I touch it at REI, I don't like the sound.

I did but it's damn near 2 pounds. Was looking at the UL7 but not sure if that will be enough insulation.

Honestly I don't mind packin the weight if it's worth it but I look at the xtherm and cannot beleive the weights on the expeds. Probably gonna have to lay on the. To really find out. Are the 7's gonna be enough insulation down to 15-20 degrees or am I gonna have to step up to the 9's

Make sure when you compare the you look at the actual size. The ul9 is every bit as big as it claims to be but some of these pads with low weight are being generous with their measurements.

Go lay on them in a store for sounds and feel. Borrow / rent from REI or buy and later sell one. Now its winter time, is a great way and time to test it in real conditions. I like my downmat UL7, worth the weight penalty and quite. The synmat ul7 seemed colder for me.

Wait for the new version of the xtherm supposedly coming out this year. Was at the last backpacking expo. Lighter than the current version, warmer, and QUIETER (the most important thing). I'll probably have to upgrade my current xtherm when it comes out.

I've got the Syn matt 7 in Lg/ long and its my go to pad. Yeah, its heavier but its made from a pretty sturdy fabric which is ok with me as I prefer it to stay inflated on a backcountry trip

I slept on my Xtherm a few days ago down to -6 and was warm. In three years of use I've never had it leak.

Its 3.5 inches thick vs the Xtherm 2.5....my hips/ shoulders don't touch the ground and the Exped has an 8 R-value. warmest by a bunch. In the summer I use a lighter pad but in the winter, I'll pack the extra.
