Im hoping to get a little advice from some people that have "been there and done that". Im looking to have a stove jack installed in my SL5. Right now Im leaning towards the Bearpaw large jack. I was considering the Ti goat also. Im hoping to use the shelter for 2 people, so I am thinking installing it in the middle(rear panel). As long as we are on the topic, what size stove do you prefer for this shelter? Any advice would be greatly appreciated....Thanks!

Facing the door of the tent, I have my jack (from Bear Paw) installed on the right panel. Here are some photos from a Wyoming hunt at the beginning of this month. It was tight but tolerable for two of us and a stove with all the wet. This setup wasn't the best as we set camp in the rain. Ideally I would have liked to have the stove pipe pointing away from the tent but overall, I only had a couple tiny ember burns on the far left edge. Stove is an 8" (I think) DIY stove.

Thanks Brad, so if the jack was in that rear panel (center) do you think it provide any more room for 2 guys?

You can move the stove just about anywhere so I don't think the placement of the jack is that vital. With that said, I believe dotman has his jack on the back panel below the vent. Here are some photos showing different stove placements and why I don't think it is all that important. You can put the stove just about anywhere except maybe directly across on the other side of the pole.

Installed mine (Ti Goat), on the left panel. Not sure I'd recommend it that way or not. It's perfect for one guy, and a second guy can squeeze in on the left side, but he has to be constantly aware that he's right next to a red hot stove to avoid burning holes in his stuff.

Looking towards the door.

Putting it in the back panel would have been far better for access, but the big vents on the SL-5 interfere. Really the ideal set up is a bigger tent! No matter were it goes in an SL-5, it's going to be tough to maneuver around, and nylon gear will be at risk.

Yeah I have mine on the back panel below the vent (inline w/pole), works great for two and is easy for either guy to stoke.

I have the ti-goat 16" cylinder stove and it heats it up nicely, almost to nice.

Did you put the jack fairly low on the wall, or did you do something about the vent? Back of the tent would be the best case I think, but couldn't figure out a way to do it that made me happy.

Since we are kind of on the topic, anyone thought about covering the vents to keep the heat in a bit. I notice that other tents like Kifaru and seek outside don't even have vents.

The top of the jack is a few inches lower then the vent, pipe in middle so pipe is probably 8" below the vent. Didn't do anything to the vent but I like brads thought about finding a way to close up the vent as the heat does escape quickly. Maybe some Velcro or something.

Yeah, I've thought about it. With those two big vents and no sodcloth, firing up the stove basically turns the tent into a big chimney. No real easy way to do it that see, but I'm sure with enough cutting and sewing it would be possible. But of course, with the vents closed, the minute the stove went out it would be condensation city in a small enclosure.

Trying to cheap out and use an SL-5 as a heated shelter does come with some fairly noticeable drawbacks IMO.

Do you have pics of your setup? I just picked up a SL5 and will be installing a stove jack soon too.

I was looking for some and it seems I don't take pics of my setup other then when pitched after a 14hr drive and 4 mile hike in and it is setup at 2am, done so well that a slight breeze would blow it over (I woke up in the morning with the side wall literally inches from my face), so no pics.
