Was worried it was going to hot to chase turkeys in May but the high country is getting some snow the next couple days. Guess I'll be heading out desert in search of a Rio. General opener is Monday and is forecast to be rainy/windy all weekend though Monday but we'll be there regardless. Hardscrabbles look to be just the ticket again

Back home in Utah. Have to leave for work in Oregon on Tuesday for a couple weeks so I can't get to far from home. Taking my 7 year old out so I'm trying to avoid him dealing with cold feet or I would chase a Mariam in the snow.

After enjoying 86* in the hardscrabbles I knew I wanted to try SKRE gear designed for warm weather. I ordered up the uinta pants in the same 38r as the hardscrabble pants I've been running. I also ordered the short sleeve alpine shirt in 3x because it was on sale and the reviews stated it ran small. I threw in a basin beanie because I'm addicted to beanies for some reason. Finished my order up with a hi line hat.

Alpine shirt fit was as expected more like an XXL or XL+ should be perfect for August archery here. Here's a picture on the scale

The Alpine is 100% polyester

Didn't wear this shirt much only on a single hike. It did breath very well and the fabric didn't seem to make any noise. My preference is always long sleeves for hunting to cover my skin but I can see me working the alpine into the rotation and at it's sale price it was a no brainier

I had a heck of a time trying to figure out the difference between the hats on the website. I emailed SKRE after I ordered and hi line is more structured than the hardscrabble hat. The hi line also has a buckle while the hardscrabble has a snapback.

Hats are a very personal thing to look and fit. I liked the fit but I did notice that the extra strap after adjusting the hat didn't tuck in anywhere just hung out to the side not sure but think that detail will drive me crazy

I really like the depth of the hi line hat and the inner sweat band is very comfortable. I was setup in a blind with my dad and son. I was sitting behind both of them calling and that dam tag end of the adjustment keep hitting on the blind support. Not sure what the fix is maybe a different hat. I be interested in seeing some pictures of the hardscrabble hat.

It was more of a experience trying to figure out how to keep a 7 year old interested and having fun than killing a turkey

Rios would roost in the cottonwoods a long the river come off the roost and go directly up this bluff fly up the rimrock and feed on top than fly down at night

hard to see but a turkey is skylined near the top

always amazes me that turkeys live in this country. I can not think of two more distinct opposite hunting situations - Missouri farm land and southern Utah desert

You can only access about 3 total miles of river bed in this spot so by getting on top you can look down into the thick stuff on the bottom. Of course most birds loved to hug the rim rock either above or just below

Pretty confident I saw most of the turkeys that live in the area that are using our side of the river and only spotted a single Tom. We set up accordingly.

I didn't bring a gun along as I wanted Grandpa to harvest one. Taking my boy back to camp we ran into this Tom again breeding a hen. First time seeing that unfold. Ran back for the gun but they of course were gone. Probably the ol red rider going off spooked them. Haha kids are awesome he told me he aimed for the body because his head was to small.
