Will be in Sitka end of May/beginning of June, looking to do some hiking. What are some trails we should hike? We want to get after it.

Mt. Verstovia trail is a good one if there’s not too much snow up high. Indian River trail and Gavin Hill are other options.

Should we bring our kenetreks/gaiters? Not sure what kind of shape these trails are in

The trails are very well maintained. The gaiters are helpful because of the wet conditions and to summit Verstovia and descend is a four hour excursion. The gaiters keep those active lower leg muscles cozy for a full day. If your looking for a shorter timeframe excursion the Beaver Lake trail is special. It’s a little less elevation gain and circumnavigates a fine lake nestled in the hills adjacent to Bear Mountain.

In looking at some google images taken at the top of the trail, some folks are wearing extra toughs, some even wearing tennis shoes. (y)

We took a boat out to Mt Edgecomb, did an overnight at a shelter. Hiked to the top, near the caldera if I remember right.

Verstovia was also nice.

My memory could be off a bit, this was back in 2002ish, stayed about a month working in Sitka.
