Anyone else have any luck this Oct/Nov in SE AK? We had a fun trip, not many deer though. Can't wait to go back.

Awesome, have fun!

I saw 5 deer in 9 days, he was the 5th... Hunted dark to dark each day, rain or shine (mostly rain!). Either way, we really had fun once it all came together. We had no clue what we were doing, so after 7 days of wandering around and calling with no real "direction", I decided to just use what I know about whitetails to hunt them. Found some good sign, set up near it and was going to sit the entire day... At daylight I spotted this buck come through a funnel and I made a few calls, moved in on him and he came to 30 yards for a shot.

Pretty fun animals, likely even better when you can see them :)

Kodiak next year!

Sounds about like as much action as I saw on POW last year......dark to dark...gotta love dark at 4:00 pm ;) Kodiak is another world from POW...neither is better than the other IMO just different.

I like the idea of being able to SEE deer, Kodiak will be more open and I can use my glass... Oh then there are those silly white goats running around with liberal seasons, so I will take advantage of that while I am there too :) Hunt deer for a few days then move to goat country.

I wish I would have been able to get a bear tag for POW, I saw 3 or 4 with one being the biggest black bear I have ever seen, about 40 yards away in some dark timber while we were trying to find a place to get down the mountain without going STRAIGHT off a cliff!

POW was great, I think a place like that could be a blast when a guy gets to know it and how to hunt it.

Most guys we came across were using a distress call with good results, we did as well, but up until the last day it wasn't working for crap.

They say these deer are easy, in retrospect the one I shot was... Came in, hook, line and sinker... But until then I couldn't find a deer to save my life!

Still fun none the less, learned a few things, got a little frost bite on my toes, slept in a wet bag for two nights, hunted with frozen boots, etc... LOL You know, all the things we dream about in the off season! LOL

Just returned from a brown bear/deer hunt down near Sitka. Saw 3 deer in 11 days of hunting and took one on the second day there. A buddy of mine was on Kodiak during the same period and took a brownie, two goats and three deer. His buck was a bruiser blacktail to say the least. Believe he took all the animals with a rifle. We'll be heading to Kodiak next year for sure!

Welcome to Alaska Nick!

Ya Luke, you might need four days to to get a Brownie, two goats, and three deer. If your bow hunting of course? Grin!

Congratulations Nick. Wet bag can really put a damper on a hunt way to push though and make it happen

I don't know......Baranof Island is rumored to be the very best location for Sitka Deer. Afterall it is where the real Sitka is. The weather is mild, the mountains easy, and the ocean is protected there. The bears are also very docile with a plentiful natural food source everywhere. Yup, Baranof Island is the new mecca. :)
