Sig cross vs custom tikka build??

I was in need of the same type of platform but went with a tikka due to being left handed. It ended up being a bit heavier but I'm super impressed with how it shoots. I put it in an mdt chassis.

Nice rig sir. Have you weighed it?

I have both and the 18.5” 6.5CM Cross is a slick setup out of the box. Light, compact, and easy to shoot out to ~700 yards. Beyond that and the featherweight buttstock starts to be noticeable.

If you want a turnkey folding chassis, get the Cross. If you want a project, go the Tikka route.

I reach for that rifle pretty often just because it packs so easily and is a pleasure to shoot. The short barrel costs you some velocity, but for my purposes it was perfect.

I was in the same situation as you; I went with the 6.5 Cross mostly out of convenience.

In line with what northernalpine said, I wanted a setup that would be (nearly) good to go out of the box, not something I had to tinker with / customize / upgrade.

So far, the Cross has checked the boxes I wanted: short and threaded barrel, foldable and adjustable stock, and easy attachments for tripod / bipod. And it's shot 1" to 1.5" 5-shot groups with most of the factory Hornady ammo I've tried, and about 2" with cheap practice rounds.

In the next few years, I'm very interested in getting a pre-fit 6 CM barrel. But, as an inexperienced shooter — and after adding a suppressor and upgraded recoil pad —I've found the 6.5 Cross very nice to shoot, and I can usually spot my impacts from 300 yds and out.

I don’t have one, never shot one, but they grabbed my attention when everyone was gladly paying what seemed like a premium for what you get - I thought for sure these must be tack drivers at that price. I don’t think it’s a coincidence many of these have been rebarreled, and many online reviews show less than stellar accuracy. A ton of these showed up in the hands of online influencers, not by accident, but thanks to Sig’s marketing budget. I watched one dude putting 1-3/4 MOA groups down range bragging how accurate it was - he wasn’t high, drunk, or mental, so apparently deep discounts on demo rifles gets guys to overlook the obvious. I tuned out Sig completely after than. You could buy the cheapest rifle in the gun store for 1-3/4 MOA.

There was quite a bit of that going around - I don't do the social media thing and shot one when the Sig rep was out at my local range during a match.

I've been pleased with the performance, and have had good accuracy with my factory barrel, similar to what @patagonialuke has seen. 140gr-156gr shoots exceptionally well, some of the lighter loads (129gr SST, 130gr TA) were a little loose on grouping for me; hand loaded 130gr TMKs are shooting well and are going to see some action this year.

If I shunned any brand that puts a tool in the hand of someone I didn't like, my tool chest, gun safe, and garage in general would be barren 🤣

I probably sounded too harsh against them - the design is cool and if it shoots good then I can see the appeal. The influencer I mentioned was only doing what gun writers have been doing for the past 100 years, so it’s hard to blame him too much.

No offense taken my friend, totally understand what you were saying and why. These are strange days in terms of marketing...any clown with a phone and an internet connection can broadcast their opinion to the masses.

I started down the path of wanting a shorter 6.5 CM to run suppressed. Then I started looking at folding stock options for various rifles. Adjustable LOP is a requirement too so my kids can also shoot it.

Then I found the sig cross and I’ve been to the gun store several times looking at them and watched every video out there on them.

I cannot build a 18” threaded barrel folding stock rifle for what I can get the sig for.

Therefore I’m here to ask for confirmation on proceeding with the sig cross. I’m
99.99% convinced this is the route I want to go.

Intended use is a mountain rifle out to 500 yards and whitetail here in Oklahoma.

one of my kids is left eyed dominate, she had been shooting a 6.5CM cross suppressed since she was 8, now that she is done growing, this year she is a getting her own forever rifle- custom 18" left-handed 6 CM.

The cross platform is hard to beat for a kid. outside of the adjustability and weight, the safety is ambidextrous, it has a much shorter trigger reach the traditional stock and the 2 stage trigger is an easier shot process for them to master IMO,(find back wall and then squeeze through)

I'm about to re-barrel it to a 22 CM for me though. If they offered it in the 22 or 6 CM, I think it would be the perfect kids rifle from get go

If you just want a Lite, blued, then buy this one: https://www.eurooptic.com/tikka-t3x-lite-65-creedmoor-synthetic-jrtxe382 (around $725 with shipping, tax, and FFL fee).

Send it to Kampfeld to have it chopped and threaded with a collar (around $200 with shipping both ways, he charges $145 for the service)

It would end up being a bit cheaper than getting it from UM.

Then get the HNT26 chassis as it is probably the best lightweight folder on the market. If you watch the various classifieds, you should be able to find one for around $1100-1200.

That would put you into the setup about $2100-2200, so about $500 more than the Cross, but you would get a much better action, trigger, stock, and most likely barrel.

the HNT26 is a great chassis and probably best lightweight chassis but not best for growing kid. It's not the easiest to change LOP , And cost almost as much as the sig cross itself

I rebarreled my wife’s Cross to a 22CM and regret not doing it sooner. It shot great as a 6.5 but she’s become a better shooter with the slight recoil reduction of the 22CM.

I sold a Bergara HMR 6.5CM to buy a Cross 6.5CM a few years ago, as I wanted the adjustability and lighter weight for the kids. All-weather durability was a bonus. It’s become one of my favorite rifles, especially with a light Ti can out front. Rifle hammers with 143eldx. Also a good pick for night -vision setups for hog hunting, due to the mlok forend. Overall, a well thought out concept.

That’s good to know man. My son is 10 and will using it too.

I just sold my Bergara b14 HMR last week as well. It was a shooter but just too heavy for my liking

I did need to tweak my trigger just a bit, as it had a hint of creep, but found instructions on a Sig Cross thread on the Hide. Was easy enough. Also added a Wiebad cheek pad, as the factory comb was a bit thin for my face shape.
