Keeping your groups at 1" every ten once you get to 40 and beyond is good shooting for the average guy. There is a ton of guys that can stack arrows at 60 and 80. I've seen them and at times I was one of them. But put that person in front of a crowd or a massive bull and those groups open up. Littlebuf is right about aiming small, it will tighten your groups. I'm not even gonna bother touching on the ethics part of any of this. What I will say is I'm much more proud of my bow kills inside of 30 then outside. And from what little I know of littlebuf from this website id imagine he would say the same thing. To many people get caught up in becoming a better archer instead of a better bowhunter. Measure your trophys in how close you got, not how far a shot was made.

Last years Pro Champ and the 2nd guy to shoot a clean 560 field round in sanctioned competition, 88 yards in the wind:

This is how the best in the world shoot. We mortals aren't really even close......

Do they really shoot at a target that torn up in competition?

Wapiti, whoever shot that has some skills!

4 of, if not the 4 best shooters in the world who shoot professionally, with target equipment.

I am not saying That 1 inch per 10 yards is impossible to beat or do better than.... simply that it is a great shot with hunting equipment. For 1, when I say groups, mean consistent every time groups.

2 inches at 20 yards isn't amazing... but the x on a blue face target is only what...1.5 inches? How many can shoot 60x consistently with their hunting bow? I can tell you it's a percentage of hunters very close to zero.

Not sure how people get worked up So easy. No need to put people down and swear... Just a guy who was happy with a great group and felt good to show it off. God forbid.

This is what I meant I just wasnt able to articulate it as well. Sorry for turning it into the 24hourcampfire on here.

Dialing your form in is great...time to take it to the next level; hunting practice- one arrow, unmarked range pull up and shoot, or kneeling and shoot- hunting type scenarios where you aren't standing on level ground with all day to shoot at a big round circle- thats what separates the hunters from target guys.

I agree with the basic point ( which the OP understood) that littlebuf is making, and like him I strive to have a 3 arrow group touching at 40 yards. Do I always do it, no but the group sure is small if I don't. I aim small to help me do that, its the old pick a small spot and focus on it and the rest will take care of itself idea. I am not a pro by any strench, just a bowhunter; but I aim to be the best I can be. I don't shoot at the same spot under 30 yards b/c you start to wreck arrows and I don't use targets, always a piece of tape or solid colored piece of small paper.

To the OP nice shooting and like others have said, use smaller targets and in short order you will have to start shooting at different spots to save money on knocks and arrows :).

On a side note I never understood the argument that groups open up on animals. How many times dose a person shoot at one animal, in the same spot, in the same position to ever know that? Pick a spot on the animal, focus on it, and let your muscle memory, from hours of practice take over, and only shoot when you feel confident in the shot.

^^^what he said and what Littlebuff said. When I was shooting archery heavily (quite a while back now), and due to the fact that my backyard was only 30 yards wide, I used to take a piece of posterboard and outline a quarter (.25 cent piece) and I would color it with a yellow highlighter and cut it out. (one piece of posterboard would make 100's of targets). I could put 4 of 6 arrows in the quarter from 30 yards. Shooting at a smaller target definitely did help me.

The 65 yard group was a few years ago by 4 of the best in the world at the time. They continue to be at or near the top year after year. The lower group is a friend of mine, Ben English that won Nationals last year and also became the 2nd guy to ever shoot a clean field round. His 88 yard group was just practice getting ready for Redding.
The post was to show how the best in the world shoot, not to demean or to suggest all of us should be shooting that well. As many have said, 1/10 is fine for most of us. I'll never shoot a group like those I posted, my best days are behind me.
Practice till you're comfortable and enjoy the hunt.

Adrenaline will inherently make your groups open. It is just natural. Some people thrive on it, most don't.

Exactly. I have talked to a few elk guides who have stories of whole elk being missed inside of 20 yards - probably by guys who wouldn't miss he target let alone the bale at 20 yards on the practice range.

The adrenaline prior to the shot is the greatest feeling on earth. Making the shot is the second!

This thread really has me amused and focused in many ways. I didn't intend it to become a pissing match for anyone, especially not me. I posted that pic because I felt like I did when I finally hit a bullseye w my daisy BB gun and showed it to my dad.
Hell, I'm 52 years old and feeling like a kid again with lots to learn while having fun. Lets keep it that way, and any others w tips to improve my aim and share some of their groupings. Share your successes with us. I'm not at all threatened by anyone's responses and pictures. I have an ex-wife, so none of y'all can even come close!

Thats a pretty good group at 40yds, especially with that many arrows. I'd also shoot at a smaller target. Should shrink your groups even more. Also looks like the group is spread out more horizontally than vertically so you may want to focus on a more consistent grip. Could have also been the wind. Good luck!

Mmcan looks good bud. If your goal is to tighten it up more just keep sending them downrange and it will happen. One thing I will add is to have a FIRST SHOT GOAL as well. When you are hunting that is the most important if not the only shot you get, make that one count.

Your groups look great, keep it up and don,t force the shot. I go out to shoot and walk into the first shot as the one that counts. Go thru all the steps draw, anchor, settle in , pick a spot, release, follow thru.
Sometimes it is a short time at full draw once I settle in, and other times I will hold it longer at full draw as though I am waiting for the shot to be right.
Also let down after a few minutes and redraw and shoot, all real life type situations.

You guys are cracking me up.. There is no reason to not have 3 arrows touching at 40 yards if it isnt windy..

That said that is a good group for shooting less than two years..

Actually I didn't say anything about what I could do, so really you should be slamming me for regurgitated Internet punch lines. You need to study up on your trolling. And you interjected ethics of shots on deer from left field. Never was that brought up. But for the record I've taken game out to 70 with my bow and never wounded an animal, so your " how many holes have they poked in critters" or what ever you ignorant comment was I guess isn't across the board

And some target bows with six foot stabilizers hanging off them.

I am also a big fan of the small target. For 20+yrs, the only target I carry is a sheet of those 1.5" blaze orange dot stickers. Don't always hit it, but usually pretty damn close. Small targets definitely tighten groups.
