Had my best grouping ever, 40 yards and fairly windy today. Had to end it on a good note so I pulled them and went home. But can't wait to go back!

Nice grouping but I'd stop shooting so many or its gonna start costing you arrows

Yes indeed. I usually don't try to shoot so many at one point, but this was the only target available, and shooting like this, I seriously didn't care at the time. Only knicked a couple of fletchings for some reason.

How long have you been shooting?

Bought my bow about 18 months ago. Have been continually reading and learning, evolving to where I'm getting fairly comfortable with my gear and what I would like to try to do with it.

This is just so damn fun, especially if you add hunting into the sport. I didn't even bring a gun into my deer stand last season (and got skunked for the pleasure!), but I wouldn't change that at all.

I've killed many hogs (they're like rats on our lease) with rifles and my bow, but have yet to take a deer with my bow. Big bucket list item is to elk hunt this fall. So that's really my goal for now, and why I'm really trying to get in shape and shoot better as I tweak my bow and arrows. I'll march it out to 50 yards soon, and 60, and farther,... Doubt I'll ever be a Cam Hanes shooting pie plates at 160 yards, but I hope to hit it hard out to 100 yds before too long. It really makes you think about all your factors as you aim and shoot. And it makes shorter distances so much easier.

I know I'm preaching to the choir about all of this, as I can tell there are MANY experienced hunters on Rokslide. And I appreciate you humoring me as I post pics and write about how much fun this novice is having.

Life is good, and even funner with a little bow hunting thrown into the mix. Thank you Rokslide and your members!

No offense, but this is just not true. Top pros with target equipment do not touch every arrow at 40. Yes, many good shooters do and can... but to claim one isn't accurate until doing it every time is misleading and discouraging to most new shooters. If you can touch every shot at 40, image what u can do at 20...I know not everyone loves target archery, but one hole groups 30 times would get you 50k plus endorsements in Vegas.

I tend to tell new shooters to set a goal of 1 "archery moa" it's not a real moa, but 1 inch per 10 yards is flat ass amazing shooting if you do it every time and out to 80+ yards.

I like the idea of 1"/10 yards especially as you get out to longer ranges. I would hope that I'd be able to shoot 1" at 20 yards at will before too long. But my goal is the kill zone. That isn't 1" unless you're shooting for the ear canal or something. So while I agree that I want even tighter groups and will take all advice (and also a grain of salt), my focus isn't on a red bullseye right now. It's on a 6-8" area allowing a heart or double lung shot on any animal I hunt.

If I can consistently shoot like this out to 50 yards, I would strongly consider taking that shot if other conditions were right. Little to no wind. Calm feeding animal standing in one place,...

I also plan to shoot well past that in the event that I need to send a follow up arrow if my first one wasn't just right. I would hope that that is within 100 yards of course! But I think that would qualify as an ethical intent.

Everyone has their own bias and confidence in what they are capable of shooting. I enjoy the discussion and look forward to more of your comments.

This is how the best in the world shoot. We mortals aren't really even close......

1"/10 yards is a very reasonable standard to work towards. I would say that is typical for "good" shots, and there are folks who can cut that in half.

Just remember that shooting at the range is not the same as shooting at an animal, and you need to be really honest with yourself about your ability to shoot animals. Some guys shoot the same, and some guys fall apart. I personally use the rule of limiting my range to that where I can hit a 4" circle 4 out of 5 times knowing my "groups" will open up when shooting at animals - nothing scientific behind that but it works for me.
