Yep. We weren't really expecting it either. It made butchering the 'bou a nice and clean operation. The pack out, quite frankly sucked...Luke has dragged me on some not-so-fun pack outs but high stepping through knee deep snow and waist deep alders might take the cake for worst pack outs ever. Oh, I forgot the super sketchy creek crossing... Maybe there is a reason no one else wanted to go after those caribou :)

Well at least I know what I have to look forward to next weekend! Fun-fun!

YK, the willow trekking poles are for you buddy....had NOTHING to do with the fact that I forgot my trekking poles at home!!! :D

Nice. But I'm going to have to educate you on proper stick selection.

Personally, I prefer nothing but the finest of fire killed black spruce sticks from our interior Alaska fires. My dad on the other hand is a fan of white spruce sticks, but only the ones that have been peeled by rutting bull moose and allowed to dry on the stump. Willow is kind of the walking stick equivalent of using twist locks....

I'll give you some credit though for finding what must have been the longest, straightest willow stick on the mountain. :)

Good work on a last minute caribou.

Yk

HAHA....good to know....I'm thinking you need to write an article outlining all of this in great detail. :D Only thing I learned was the dead ones aren't sufficient and break so if going with a willow you want it as green as they come....plus they bend a bit, kinda like those stupid shock absorbing trekking poles :D

If I had known the bou were in those hills rather than the Clearwater hills I would have headed over. Three days of canoeing in white outs took its toll on me and the dog. When I drove by Rock creek on the way in I wondered about lining the big metal canoe out to the lakes in the more western creek. That is wonderful country.

Luke's pack looks bigger because he's shorter. Thats 40,000 stuffed Kifaru CI's. And I packed light!Luke had 3 rafts...totaled out around 86#. I had 2 rafts and a plethora of other stuff at 94#. Great little 7 mile or so jaunt.

Sorry, no animals packed up from me and nothing fancy for a pack. Just a plain jane USMC ILBE gettin' it done...

desertcj,

Have you actually packed out loads with the ILBE? Wondering how it handles 100 or so lbs?

Also, how would you rate overall durability?

I just got it this summer so I've only had it to 65lbs or so. It was designed to carry loads up to 120lbs (Claimed). It has a few downfalls like the load lifters. I can't tell that they do much so I end up always leaving them cinched down. I also wouldn't have enough room without the Assault pack piggy backed on it and I still can't tell you if that is going to be enough room to pack out an animal. Maybe that's my fault though and I just need to whittle my load out down some more. Overall I feel it's been pretty durable so far. I really like some of the features though. The source hydration is designed to integrate with the pack and it's been really nice. I also really like the radio bag for carrying my food in.
