Flying out of town for business today, but I was able to swing by sportsman's right next to the airport before my international departure. They were pretty busy but I busted out my postage scale and put it on the counter asking them to show me all their lightweight 300 Win Mag rifles. The options were few, with most other options weighing significantly more. Here is what I learned, photo's below for reference.
Doing a little further research but the Tikka Superlite still looks like the basis for my first ultralight Elk rifle. Still looking for people to send their lighweight mountain rifle scope suggestions. I want to be confident out to 600yards.
- Tikka Superlite stainless in 300WM weighs 96.8oz [6lbs 0.8oz]
- Howa carbon stalker in 300WM weighs103.0oz [6lbs 7.0oz]
- NOTE: trigger guard weighs 4.2oz which I subtracted to get the above weight.
- Tikka T3x lite in veil with bronze cerakote, muzzle brake, fluted barrel and fluted bolt was well over 7lbs so I didn't record the details, but I should have for the users here on Rokslide, so I'm sorry for that!
- Leupold VX3 HD (mfg p/n: 180623) weighs 15.5oz.
- my biggest complaint on this scope is the parallax is not numbered distances. just hash marks which I consider a big detractor.
- Leupold Mark 5 HD w (mfg p/n: 173296) weighs 25.4oz [1lb 9.4oz] [too heavy i think for this build but it's a really awesome robust scope that's compact and has a 35mm tube, so i'll check if i have the room in the weight budget for glass like this.
