I am thinking about starting to do NRL hunter. I have been watching some gear videos to make sure I have everything I need. The only thing really sticking out to me is that I don't really have a great tripod. I do have a tripod that I use (Aziak Backcountry Lite) for glassing when hunting but I don't think that would be great for shooting NRL hunter.

I am seeing a lot of people recommend RSS or Two Vets but those tripods aren't really in the budget right now. I am hoping to spend between $300-$500.
If anyone has any recommendations on tripod for NRL hunter matches that would be appericated, thanks you!

Shoot a match and see if you like it, last year leofoto had lots of certificates on the prize table that usually lasted through lots of shooters, you could pick one up if they are sponsoring again and get a

SO-362CX

Look at some of the Leofoto offerings. I regularly see them on sale at 10-20% off on ebay.

My preference is the MA-30L head. (The L model has a quick release) If running an Arca rail it's a lot quicker to attach.

If you aren’t spending RRS money no one beats Leofoto because they are the OEM for a bunch of other companies rather than just an importer/middleman.

For NRL hunter an inverted 2 section is ideal for deployment speed like a Leofoto SO-282CX, SO-322Cx. The Leofoto 324 series is a great all around option for hunting but it’s slower to deploy on the clock.

I know this is different than some of the options provided.

But does anyone have any input on this?

It is 50% off if I buy something else from them (anything so was just going to buy something cheap)

Thought it seemed like a good deal

That is a really really good deal. I have the 283 I pack for hunting but this one is heavier (better for NRL). Three section tripods are stiffer and lighter than four section tripods - and fully collapsed is a great working height.

For an all around tripod it’s pretty ideal. Sort of what I bought and use my RRS33 for, but at 1/6 the price.

I have a like new Trinity shooting tripod I’d make a deal on. Can confirm it’s excellent to shoot off of.

I would snatch one but I think I’m set on inverted legs.

Does anyone use the half-ball head in NRL hunter? Just curious as to why (yes OR no to using it). Seems like having a wider head would allow greater control options (I am not an expert at all).

I prefer a table and a bag to support the rifle. Side note, tripod leg stiffness is less critical if you are not locking the rifle into the tripod directly via ballhead. Meaning you can get away with a lesser tripod.

I would second what others have said about the SO-282CX. The short version is light enough to double as a great hunting tripod and still plenty stable and tall enough for an average sized man to shoot off of standing if needed. They are spendy, but you now have a tripod for hunting and matches. Any of the larger versions are not something you would want to carry hunting. I much prefer being clipped in with an Arca plate, but a bag can work. Especially if you run a heavy gun the bag is a solid option

I’m guessing inverted is the way to go? I like the compactness of the 3 section but seems like it could be a pita setting up.

I think inverted is great for speed and deployment, especially in the competition realm.

I don't like caring one in an actual hunting environment, it's 40" tall when collapsed, it would get hung up on everything when it's in my pack. Depending on your terrain that might be okay.

I just hunted a bunch of timber in Colorado and a 2 piece inverted tripod would have sucked.

I was looking at the 282 CX (regular) and not the 282 CMX (Short) The short version is only 30" tall which isn't too bad.

I wish someone made a lighter 3 section inverted, that would be awesome, I'd like to see the Tricer HK and compare it to the Leofoto. It checks a lot of boxes.

I have a 404 and a ma30l that I am kicking around selling. I don't gamer shoot so it's surplus to me. I actually prefer the mh heads for my style.

At 9” longer I have been telling myself it’s worth the trade to be able to stand up and glass or shoot.
