So what you’re telling me is, this would be a great choice???

Nightforce ATACR 4-16x50 .1 MRAD Mil-R Scope C543

I’ll be out there with a $350 SWFA 6x gen2 mil-quad scope on each of my rifles. If I could not get one of those, I’d use a 10x at the same price.

I know it’s preached over and over…..but could a person that is familiar with moa, effectively shoot this corse with a moa sfp scope?
IMHO, you’d be fine for most of the class, and even the part where you can use RF bino’s with ballistics in them. Where I would have problems is when you are estimating (e.g., wind calls, velocity truing, etc.). Even doing that, it is certainly doable, just going to be much slower. My $.02

I think you’ll get more out of the class using a ffp mil scope. Like others have said you’ll probably end up switching during the class as you realize the moa scope you have is making things unnecessarily difficult. Better to just familiarize yourself with mil beforehand, or at least bring mil scopes and learn it during the class.

I have the FFP 4-16x42 version of that one and it's great but heavy as fudge and the reticle is tiny up to 10x. Good catch on the SFP on that model T_widdy.

I try to validate the purchase of that scope from time to time by putting it on something and shooting it but I'm usually shooting a Maven RS1.2 or 3-9 SWFA.

If you're mil curious the swfa is a good point of entry because of cost.

And what’s great is no need to “upgrade” if one ends up liking mils. I have a slight preference to my SWFA mil reticle when compared to my maven Mil. I shoot both very often

After my class, I pulled my Maven RS1.2 off my 6 creed, and put on a 3-9 SWFA. I truly enjoyed the less weight and smaller size of the SWFA for hunting this year over the Maven. I had zero problems getting an antelope @ 495 yards with the SWFA.

If you're mil curious....

I love this dude. ^^

If you're mil curious before the class, you're gonna be the RuPaul of milradians after.

IMO, it's worth having a dialable FFP mil scope with windholds in the reticle before the class. It's a small investment to be able to get comfortable with the idea by putting 1k+ shots downrange. The information will be more tailored to you and you won't be frustrated/distracted trying to make conversions in your head. No question, it's a benefit.

If someone doesn't get named MilRadRuPal, we have failed.

Please educate me: why is FFP better?

One thing I can appreciate about high magnification (SWFA or maven) is final judging of the animal before I shoot. Or when I don’t want to try to get my tripod out and mount the spotter

I struggle to hold my binos steady when I’m excited and struggle to judge animals past about 300 yards. 15x with the rifle steady is very handy. Then I back it out to 8-10x and shoot

If you're trying to hold for wind or make corrections, it's a lot easier when your ruler is the same at any magnification.

Gotcha. Not a concern with a fixed power scope. That explains why I never worried about it.

Or, frankly, on a SFP scope that doesn’t have a stupidly high top end magnification. As I look at it, a 2-8x, 3-9x, or 2.5-10x SFP would work just fine for most long shots. But I would want a 3-15x or 3-18x FFP.

I had to turn my scope up to 9x to see the antlers at all on my last buck. He broke both of them off fighting. He was probably only 18 months old anyway, but that age makes the best eating.

I still like as low as 6x sometimes at distances where i might hold wind but yeah, SFP on a 9 or 10x max mag scope is less of an issue than on a 20x+ mag scope.

If you're going to this class in the summer, from everything I'm seeing, getting a FFP SWFA just to get acquainted with it and learning how to use the reticle system in prep for the class might be a good idea. To get the most out of the class.

I've always had a preference for a really fine aiming point, and because of that have always preferred SFP scopes, as the reticle stays the same size regardless of magnification setting, rather than getting bigger or smaller. But I think I'll be picking up either one of the SWFA 3-15s or a Maven FFP, to start learning the reticles level up the skillsets with all that.

So. Basically
“Trainer rifle” Tikka 223, 16in, suppressor, mil scope
“Hunting rifle” Worked Rem 700 280ai, 22in, suppressor, mil scope
?????

Have you been to the course?
