SG Chillkoot 15* vs. 0*

In the market for a new bag. Currently use an REI magma 15* … love the bag and honestly it’s great for most my hunts. Could be a little taller and wider (I’m 6’ 200#) It seems more like a 30* bag tho..I’ve actually gotten a bit chilly in 30-40* weather if there’s wind a few times… I’d like to have something for colder hunts in the 10-30 degree range. I feel like the Chillcoot zero would be what I’m looking for and can always keep it half open if it’s warm. But a few people have told me the Chillkoot 15* is a true 15* and probably exactly what I want. Any thoughts, advice, suggestions ? Thanks!

you can always vent a bag if it is warm, if it is cold not much you can do about that but wear more clothes and imo that sux.

That’s exactly my train of thought buddy thank you ! Would like to hear if there’s any downside to this,,, they are only a few oz. Differnce.. leaning hard this way..

I have not found any downsides. You can always unzip the bag and lay it down like a quilt. I do that often.

I bought the Chilkoot 15 this summer and used for a scouting trip in the end of August with temps maybe 40 at night so I just left the bag only partially zipped and was quite comfortable, so much so, I slept in one morning. I then used it for my hunt for 1st season rifle in CO with temps in the mid thirties in the morning. Not the best test for temps but I wouldn't hesitate using it lower than it's rating. It's very well built and had great reviews on Rokslide.

In about your same size, 6 foot 205 lbs. My thought was the same. I hate freezing so I went 0 knowing I could always unzip and vent which I did this year. Slept comfy and when I started to get cool zipped it back up.

Literally only down side I can see going with the 0 over the 15 is a few extra ounces and it does not compress down as much. But looking back I'd still get the 0 for sure. And fyi there is the perfect amount of room for me in that bag. The only thing I dont like is the neck baffle. I like to sleep with my arms up by my head and it makes that a little more difficult.

I'd be looking at western mountaineering bags. There were some sales this summer and I snagged a versalite for my fiance for $550 on campsaver if I recall correctly.
