For rut hunts where they’re down low in the thicker stuff, what are the any shot distances you guys are seeing?

In a week I’ll be headed to prince of whales for a DIY (out of a lodge) blacktail hunt. Ideally would like to take my 223 but it has a fixed 10x SWFA scope. I have good natural point of aim from bird hunting and don’t struggle with acquiring close-ish range targets with the 10x. I have another rifle with a maven rs1.2 but highly prefer to take the 223 with 77’s. Can only take one due to weight

Alright sounds like I may be taking the 6.5 with the maven lol

For further reference for you, my rifle that I use for SEAK in the fall has a 2.5 - 10x scope on it. I’ve kept it at 2.5 while on the move.

Here’s a muskeg that I shot a buck in the other day. This is about 100 yds back from the “beach”, I haven’t personally been to POW but the foliage and topography is similar to where I hunt. See if you can spot the doe in the photo too, I’ll never get over how well these deer blend in. First blacktail I ever saw while hunting, I damn near tripped over at the edge of a muskeg.

My choice for hunting POW 6.5 cm with Trijicon Huron 3x10.

I brought my 6.5 prc with maven rs1.2 but it sat in the truck most of the time. As I kept reaching for the cm.

All the deer we shot were with the cm. Longest shot was 40 yds

One follow up question, on POW, I’m seeing open marshes (at low elevation) that on onxmaps can be 75-500+ yards long. That would make me think shots would be 50-300+ yards. Are these not the spots you usually get shots?

Switch the Maven to the 223. Assuming both rifles use the same mounting system for the rings.

That would be ideal but too late to do so. These rifles are absolutely dialed in and trued at distance over many range trips. I also have an elk cow hunt as I drive home from AK. Due to longer shots and wind I’d like the maven to stay on the 6.5 for the elk hunt

Next year the 223 will have a variable scope

Understandable. Building comfort is important, so perhaps not this trip. However, other than a few rounds to establish zero, all the rest stays valid.

On my Tikkas, 100 yard zero between the two when moving scopes is within a few inches.

Truing is for the bullet, not the scope.

If not remounting the scope in rings, there is little concern for slipping in swapping a scope using picc rings or the Tikka dove tail with recoil pins. If you have a scope mounted level, even swapping rings is pretty fast.

Personally, I would be comfortable having one scope and swapping between rifles on the fly with just a few verification rounds at each swap once I recorded the difference in zero between both rifles. Set the zero stop for the lowest, and dial and slip the turret between rifles without changing the zero stop.

I'm using picc rails because I prefer the NF rings for moving scopes, just more convenient than UM rings to me and not going to strip aluminum threads from doing it a lot.
