SEAK Rut Shot Distance Avg?

For rut hunts where they’re down low in the thicker stuff, what are the any shot distances you guys are seeing?


In a week I’ll be headed to prince of whales for a DIY (out of a lodge) blacktail hunt. Ideally would like to take my 223 but it has a fixed 10x SWFA scope. I have good natural point of aim from bird hunting and don’t struggle with acquiring close-ish range targets with the 10x. I have another rifle with a maven rs1.2 but highly prefer to take the 223 with 77’s. Can only take one due to weight

10 to 50 yards. Or you’ll spend all day up there and see nothing then get back to the beach and one will be in the open next to the boat Lol.

All my shots during the rut have been 30 yds or less.

For further reference for you, my rifle that I use for SEAK in the fall has a 2.5 - 10x scope on it. I’ve kept it at 2.5 while on the move.

To add to the average, the only one I’ve ever shot was 30 yards. Hard to see a shot opportunity greater than 100 yards happening often in that forest.

Here’s a muskeg that I shot a buck in the other day. This is about 100 yds back from the “beach”, I haven’t personally been to POW but the foliage and topography is similar to where I hunt. See if you can spot the doe in the photo too, I’ll never get over how well these deer blend in. First blacktail I ever saw while hunting, I damn near tripped over at the edge of a muskeg.

My choice for hunting POW 6.5 cm with Trijicon Huron 3x10.

I brought my 6.5 prc with maven rs1.2 but it sat in the truck most of the time. As kept reaching for the cm.

All the deer we shot were with the cm. Longest shot was 40 yds
