Need some input.

Currently looking at optics to put on a new rifle.
Rifle will primarily be used for hunting (600 yrds or less) but will sometimes be used for some long range shooting trying to stretch out to 1,000. Most hunts will be elk hunts/mule deer/ whitetail.

Rifle I’m pairing this with is a bergara wilderness sierra in .308. Bedded nightforce full steel pic rail. Probably going with badger steel rings but open to suggestions.

I currently own some lower end vortex crossfire scopes and a swfa ss 10x42. Love the ss but just don’t want a fixed 10 power on a hunting rig.

Currently I’m currently favoring the Nightforce SHV 4-14x50 F1. Can get this scope for around $1,000 on expert voice. I’m liking a lot of things about this scope. Turrets are nice, love the capped windage turret. Like the zero stop. Scope looks and feels good. Like the milrad reticle and illumination. Scope looks and feels solid. Only thing I’ve noticed that I dislike is the amount of black ring around the FOV- seems to be a lot more than my other scopes.

Primarily concerned with durability and ruggedness. Glass quality and turret control would be my second concern for choosing a scope. I want this rig to be solid and dependable, not too concerned about weight as long as it’s not stupid heavy. One major thing that is a dealbreaker on some scopes is the Christmas tree reticle, can’t stand them. Way too busy and distracting. Also want a first focal plane for ranging. Not sure why so many scope manufacturers make second focal plane scopes with moa/mil reticles- just seems silly to me.

What do yall think? Also looked at some vortexes and leupolds.

I looked at some trijicons but couldn’t stand them due to the Christmas tree reticle. Honestly I’ve never even heard of maven. How’s their reputation? Lifetime warranty?

I have a maven Rs1.2 and an shv 4-14 f1 both in mils.

The SHV does have much tighter eyebox than that of the maven. But it’s not something you can’t work out while mounting. It is a beast of a scope - iE it’s gonna take a beating but it’s a heavy damn unit. That said, I like it. The mil R reticle is good and I don’t have any complaints with it.

The maven rs1.2 is a similar scope but it has some pluses over the shv - its got a way more forgiving eyebox, the glass is a bit better to my eye, its lighter, and its got a smaller objective lens. BUT its clicks are almost too light so it’s easy to bump your turret. Also it is not as durable as NF. I already had the rubber ring on my diopter come off after just a week of hunting. It holds zero still tho.

I’d say I’d weights a concern, get a maven rs1.2. If it’s not, the NF is a great option. The swfa 3-15 gen 2 should be considered as well. You’d save quite a bit of coin going this route but you’d give up illumination and it’s got some big ole turrets to work around if you cap windage.

Pretty hard to beat Maven or Nightforce. Maven isn’t on EV but they are on Guidefitter. Maven has an unconditional lifetime warranty. I’m sure there are some sweet deals in the optics classifieds this time of year as well.
