New Leupold vx5hd I adjusted half down and half inch over. First shot 1.5 down, 1, 1/2 inch and last on top of that touching.

I didn't tap it but I normally do, even though I know it's not needed.

Any truth to recoil sets it? I read today, to go past and come back. But modern scopes shouldn't have to?

Horizontal I wasn't happy with not hearing click, so I did go back and forth. Good vertical string

Working on loads for 300 win mag,. Christina arms mesa, new to me. That could be another thread. 100 yards

But 6 under a quarter before adjusting. Which is good for me, no flyers

So barrel was warm, but 15 minutes between shot.

Was this me, or did scope move to where it should?

Regardless of fan loyalty. Can you just say you have seen this or I am nuts?

Does turning past help,and back?

$1k scope should dial up and down.

For me $1k is a lot, and no plan for spending more.

Yeah it's messed up. The gold ring scopes track horribly. I'd send it in, but who knows if they'll even do anything about it. It's a real shame too because they have the patent on that turret locking system which is super slick imo.

I bought the vx5 for my 300 win mag I just bought and I am working up loads. I also just bought a freedom scope for 243 for practicing.

I sent the freedom scope back, it seemed like would double the clicks. I understand it is the cheap line, but still $350 should get you something.

I bought vx5 for hunting trip. If it stays on, not sure I'll risk sending it back this year. I'll just work on getting it 2-3 inches high and leave it

The freedom scope popped as I ran the turrets to extreme when I took out of box.

There was a time I thought it was backwards so I would turn opposite way. Now I wonder if that scope too was doing it.

Any truth that if you go 8 clicks up, then 4 down it will work? I read that while searching on this , but never heard it

I've seen it and you are only nuts if you stick with this scope that you have now seen doesn't work correctly.

Does turning past help,and back?

Nope.

$1k scope should dial up and down.

Yes, they SHOULD but many do not.

Agree that is a lot of money. Fortunately there ARE scopes out there well under $1000 that do work correctly. I'd recommend you spend some time reading the Riflescope Field Evaluation subforum in the LongbRange Hunting Forum.

The other weird thing is, I have been struggling really bad with flyers. I thought maybe me, since only shooting 20-30 rounds before season since the shortage. Plus new rifle and loads.

But these flyers just seemed off. 15 minute cool down between shots.

Trying eld-x and interlocks inr4350 69-70.

The 243 I was using a load I had under inch years ago.

Both guns over 100 shots, and like switch was thrown it started grouping.

Doing few dry fires between shot. Maybe I am just getting better. But weird how each rifle just started shooting. I was feelygood about myself, and maybe some is me.

I sure hope it is still on next time.

Not to bang on Leupold but yeah, their internals suck. But they are light and ' have great glass'. I dumped all mine except a few fixed 4x's. Friends at range make excuses for their issues and you can only tell them so many times w/o sounding like a jerk. Don't get me started on vortex.

Trijicon or SWFA for me. Weaver fixed or Burris for budget scopes.

They don't expect a Freedom line user to turn turrets that far, as 99.5% don't. Most hunters are "set it and forget it" guys...til their scope reminds them that it sucks.

Which is true of me. My hunting rifle don't get adjusted. Most of my shots are 15-50 yards.

I had just heard it's good to turn them on new scopes. I've never done it before

I like to buy Leupold cause American made.

If the vx5 holds zero I may worry about it next year. Will they fix it, or do you think this is just their product?

I was shooting locally and was off high and right. Drove it 300 miles and it is on. Well actually a half inch high and right. Which I adjusted for before this thread.

Same rock jr and sock, different bench styles.

My next thing to figure out is consistent cheek weld. Wondering if that is my problem too

I have older vx2s and 3s. I thought I was nuts, but them seemed to adjust better when doing in few adjustments at a time. Big adjustments didn't seem to work.

Also doing vertical and horizontal separate seemed better. But I always wondered if it was me. Which it might be. Spending a little shooting and dry firing this year.

But I have not been able to call some of these flyers. But again I've never known if I had good load and bullet for gun.

6 under a quarter with 180 interlock 300 win mag. Like to get better, but I think I am calling that my load to work with

I wouldn't doubt they'd send you a replacement to try and make you happy. Doubt they actually know how to fix it using their parts available.
Replacement scope could be better or worse.
I say that having probably 10 Leupolds on rifles. None were very expensive and none are used much anymore.
My attitude was set them and use them. If they lose zero, dump them. I didn't really care how much a pain they were to zero, as I've been zeroing scopes for 45 years. Any were a pain back then...and I still tap my scopes when adjusting.
