Scammed by member MJW

Or... now hear me out.... PM each other phone numbers and have a conversation prior to sending a complete stranger you met on the internet hundreds or thousands of dollars....

I've bought and sold quite a bit on here and EVERY SINGLE TIME there has been a conversation, and most of the time the conversation goes on for 30+ minutes and we both end up having questions and suggestions for one another... Pretty easy to use discernment.....
For the love of all that is holy, please heed the bolded portion and only PM your number.

Very few accounts are being hacked to scam. Most of the accounts are FNGs. Not allowing access or requiring 2FA really wouldn’t solve the bulk of the problem.

The account referenced is from 2018. Then the other account who scammed a few for swaros was a similar account that was old but hardly used. They seem to be the popular choice to be hacked. And I would bet a crisp $100 they all didn’t have 2fa

All of the Bigfoot scams have been existing account created more than a year ago.

Must be more common than I thought.

I've had my paypal hacked and my wife's Venmo acct was compromised last year. I won't use em. The last few items I've sold on RS I've requested a USPS money order and that has worked well. I also accepted a personal check on the last sale but held the item for 5 days to make sure the check cleared per my bank's recommendations. So many lazy scammers today. Totally agree with the phone calls. I don't always do it depending on the item but it's always nice to connect with someone and shoot the shit.

If you tied your bicycle to the bike rack with a shoe string, would you blame the rack when someone stole your bike?

99% of people's passwords suck, period. If your passwords consist of some combination of your middle name, family member's names, and birthdates or anniversaries, you are a hacker's dream. It would be scary to see how many people's passwords could be extrapolated from their Facebook page.

If you're not using a password manager app that stores encrypted, randomly generated passwords, you're not protecting yourself on the internet, plain and simple. ESPECIALLY on banking websites or others that are linked to your finances like PayPal, Venmo, CashApp, etc. Strong passwords look like this- eTq}PR27Gs52W#Psih@5 - not- "wifesname"1984

If your password is a random mix of numbers, letters, and symbols, is at or near the maximum length allowed, and you use two-factor authentication with an authenticator app whenever possible, you are at little to no risk of being hacked.

I have gotten pretty picky about what I will buy off the classifieds. Takes a lot of good deals to recover from losing $1350. Just not worth it.
Agreed. I passed on some glass awhile back because I was saving 70 bucks and it wasn't worth the risk.

Make access to classifieds only AFTER 100 posts and 6 months on the site. Several others are like this and its cuts the spamming/hacking down dramatically. If someone truly enjoys hunting, they will put in the effort of 100 posts and endure 6 months. Just my .02.

Lots of the accounts that end up hacked were active members sometime in the past that would easily pass both of those requirements that have since gone dormant.

As Ron White says: "You can't fix stupid". These threads with the same advice have been posted for years and people just don't heed it for some reason. I've said, ad nauseum, do a FaceTime or some type of video call with the seller holding the item and screen shot it. Don't understand the reluctance. I guess some folks have more money they're willing to lose than I do.

2FA - should be mandatory at this point, or there should be a requirement for WKR to have in enabled @robby denning
Hey, your tagging the wrong admin. Ryan and Jskaanland handle most of this stuff. I didn't tag them because they probably already know and are 25 deep in tags and PMs, so I'll only slow them down

OP, sorry you got taken.

I’m new on here and had no idea it was this much hacking going on. I buy and sell on gun broker and eBay with no such issues. I have also purchased a scope on here with no issues. I’m not crying 😭 that I got had, I’m just giving awareness to the fact that I got scammed with an account that has been active for 2 years. I would have thought as big as this forum is and the money it brings in would be more secure. It’s all good!!! I have reached out to the appropriate authorities and my bank, they may or may not catch the perpetrator either way I’ll survive regardless, I wasn’t shot just scammed out of few $$$$ lesson learned. Stay safe and be aware out there and this dog eat dog world.

The forum is plenty secure. If your password is "rokslide123", you are not secure. It is a user problem, not a website problem.

Just want to clear something up. This website is secure. When we use the word “hacked” it implies a breach of security. What is actually happening is login information is being found someway somehow and that is being used by scammers to log into accounts here. Not really any different than your legitimate login. That’s why we keep asking everybody to use a strong password and two factor authentication.

Understood!!! I have a TFA, I can’t control what other members do but you can. Just like you can send me on my way with a stroke of the key pad. As I stated no worries, I will proceed with caution ⛔️ from here on out.
