I'm looking at getting one of these guns that are going on sale tomorrow. Probably go with a 6.5 bleedmor for a beginner deer rifle for my children. Anyone have any feedback on quality with these models?

I bought the Savage Axis Youth in 6.5mm Creedmoor from Cabela's. Sold it because the recoil was insane. We were sighting in our 30-06, 300 Win Mag and the Axis but couldn't take more than a few shots with the small rifle without a break. Might have been a headspace issue? Could have been the cheap Sellier and Bellot ammo?

No clue there but aside from that the action SUCKED big time. Very stiff bolt, too hard for my son to easily cycle. Shot ok. Make sure to take the scope/mount completely off and degrease every single screw/hole. Tons of grease from the factory and would not hold zero.

Ended up picking up an AR10 in 6.5CM but haven't shot that yet...

I have 1 in 6.5 Creed and my 12 year old daughter shot her first buck with it last year. I did put Talleys and a better scope on it but shoots well. I also have the Axis 2 in 243 and the adjustable trigger is nice. I am pretty sure on the Axis 1 I did some type of spring swap but the trigger is not as nice as the Axis 2 but for the money it is fine.

We have had a Youth Model Axis for years now in .243 and killed lots of deer with it. Kids love it! I even whacked some prairie dogs in Wyoming with it last year.

But any chance did yours kick like a mule? I'm wondering if it was my rifle or the ammo...

We were shooting our 30 cals all day with no issue.

Well my daughter weighs about 110 pounds so I don’t think so. I shot it a few times and didn’t notice it. Trying to think of the ammo she was shooting. I think the cheap federal blue box which are soft points.

Gotcha.

OP - sounds like my recoil issue might be unique. However I did see another YouTube review mention the sticky bolt. I imagine it might work itself in after a few hundred cycles. I could have lived with that and for the money it should have been fine...

I have a 7-08 axis 1, and .223 axis II . both shoot great , only issue I’ve had is the 7-08 blows primers with hornady superformance GMX factory loads. Have checked headspace and it meets SAAMI specs. I’ve put probably 10 other factory loads through it and zero pressure signs.

The YouTube channel Backfire had an episode with 6.5CM recoiling hard and blowing out primers. I'm looking for his update on diagnosis...

Everyone says headspace.

Do yourself a favor and if your going to buy an inexpensive gun get a CVA Cascade. I just got one in 350 legend and it is a hell of a value. I will never buy another axis, american, etc.

Mag latch is super cheap plastic, flimsy stock. I spent a little extra money on a Ruger American Predator 6 creedmoor and am happy I did. My hunting partners daughter killed a doe and a spike bull elk with it last year, sucker flat out shoots.

Quality? No. I'd never buy one for a rifle to hand down. That said they tend to be accurate af and my brother's Axis will stack bullets in the same hole even with the crappy package scope.

You get what you pay for. As others have said…and all true….Cheap plastic, lousy action, and they do kick like mules.

I would suggest the Axis II with the accutrigger. I have a regular axis in 30-06 and upgraded the trigger.

Stock shape has a lot to do with recoil and the cheap Savage/Stevens are horrible. I bought a used 300WM Stevens for a project gun and the stock is so light and narrow there’s no way I’d touch a round off on this thing. Paid $225 and it looks like new so I won’t have much in it when I decide to screw a new barrel on and replace the stock.
