270 wouldn’t be my first choice for anything but it does a lot of stuff real well. It’s certainly not too light for elk, I’ve killed around 12 and they didn’t seem to think it was too light. But yes, if I didn’t have a fun and was buying something for elk hunting, it wouldn’t be a 270. It also wouldn’t be a 6.5cm, a 308 or a 375 but they will all kill elk stone dead with little effort.

Yes it does. I've killed a lot of big game with my pair of .270 Winchesters. I like them, a lot.

I’d go 30-06. Nothing against the 270 and I’ve never shot one. But if you are open to both, and the 30-06 has that extra bit, then I’d do that. Either will be fine for elk. Bullet choice is more important. Mono’s with high enough velocity or Partitions are good choices for elk. If you do start to load for it, 30-06 has a lot of good choices for powder and bullets.

Not entirely true, several have had it in stock in just the past few months. SPS has had blems recently too. Coppercreek sent me an email recently with it listed as available.

You buy one and still can't find ammo, I will sell you a couple of boxes of factory Nosler 140gr.

With results like this from a Proof barrel, I would not consider either of the other two.

The target was clean cold bore @ 100yds.

The doe was at 140yds thru the eyeball, I shot 2 more the following morning in the head at a hair over 300yds.

A very accurate and forgiving round out of the majority of rifles.

The obvious answer is 270.

Both the 30-06 and 270 will do almost exactly the same job for the situations you are describing. So what we are really left with is how women will react when you tell them what you are packing. When she asks that question...you want to be able to say 270 ... not 30-06. Trust me.

Either will do the job . Bonded or monolithic bullet in right place. Shot choice and placement.

No, but it is a Proof barrel

Either one is perfectly capable. I went with a .270 win because that was the caliber I could get in a fieldcraft. It is my elk rifle and everything else, but I mostly hunt elk. Another benefit was easy access to ammo the past few years.

What would be your first choice for elk?

Inside 400 yds, 35 Whelen or 35 Whelen AI. Newer Speer data has the 250 gr bullet just over 2700 fps (Allaint 2000-MR) and nipping at 2700 fps with CFE223. I get 3000 fps with the 200 gr Barnes TTSX using Speer data as a guide and work up using Alliant Power Pro Varmint powder.

The 200 TTSX can be had in Barnes factory loads at a good velocity, but the bee's knees might be the 225 Accubond in Nosler factory loads at 2700 fps.

However, for general availability of factory ammunition the 270 or '06 are your choices. I shared earlier what my thoughts are, but either one of them would be a great choice with a well constructed bullet.

That's my main concern. I found a website that sells regular accufit stocks with this aluminum bedding for $100, and I'm trying to figure out if it's worth going ahead and grabbing one, especially with the added weight of the suppressor.

I like savage rifles. I always thought a 110 ultralight in 28 nosler (I reload) with a vortex razor lht 4.5x 22x50 would be a killer lightweight long range gun . Not sure if it would rattle the fillings out of your teeth. (Sorry not to hi-jack)

I was looking at that scope, but I'm really wanting FFP with an moa reticle.

Edit: was thinking of the Viper line.

I have both and I’ve killed elk with both. My ‘06 hasn’t been on an elk hunt since I bought the .270. I believe the .270 is every bit as capable as the ‘06.

You might find this interesting, maybe, but lately I've become very fond of my pair of .375 Holland & Hollands for larger bull elk for close range jump shooting in super thick cover and/or for cross-canyon shots out to 500 yards. Just sayin' ......

i have a soft spot for 270's, so that's my vote. i don't really see the improvement in any aspect going to the 30/06.... luckily, both excellent versatile cartridges (270 is the clear winner though )
