If these stocks don’t have the aluminum bedding block, is the fore end stiff enough to handle a bipod without the stock flexing into the barrel?

Really want one of these in 6.5x284 on the long action as I’m already loading for a Savage LRH, I may call and see if they would make one up. The LRH is just too heavy to haul around, I mainly use it for hunting out of blinds/elevated stands for longer range shooting across fields.

I've been shooting my 280 AI off of a bipod and rear back for load development without any problems. I put the Patriot Valley Arms Ultralight Jet Blast muzzle brake on mine (thread size is 5/8" x 24). So far I like it, I'm a little worried about it being aluminum but only time will tell if it holds up. So far so good.

For anyone interested in the 280 AI specifically I got an average velocity of 2775 with the Hornady Precision Hunter 162 ELD-X factory ammo. I am still doing load development but the load that shows the most promise is with Reloader 23 and the 162 ELD-X at 2930.

How good were the groups with the factory 162s? The short barrel is keeping me from trying one of these. I was getting just over 2900fps with the factory 162s with a 24” barrel. Looks like you will get there with reloads though. Keep us posted on that load. Maybe you will convince me to pick one up.

They were decent (around an inch) but I was mostly using the factory ammo to get the rifle zeroed and to do the barrel break in that Proof Research recommends. Shoot 3 clean, shoot 3 clean, shoot 5 and clean. I think the rifle is definitely a shooter. I'm still getting used to shooting a light rifle but all groups have been under an inch with most well under (best is .532). Mine weighs just over 7 lbs with the Vortex LHT.

Is that group with factory ammo or your hand loads?

That group was with hand loads, shooting from a bipod and rear bag at 100 yards.

That factory ammo sounds pretty slow, how many rounds were down the barrel when you chronoed it? I’d expect the barrel to speed up if it was new when you shot the factory.

If I recall correctly, the 280 AI barrel is 22" while the published numbers are from a 24" barrel. The numbers are within the range (loss of 25 fps per loss of 1" of barrel length). Things should speed up with use. Going to hand loads should definitely speed things up.

I know my Ultralite in 6.5 PRC shoots 147 gr ELD-M (hand loads) at 3050. Went this route due to accuracy over the 156 gr Bergers (hand loads) at 3025 fps.

That was the average of the first 10 rounds out of the rifle. The barrel is starting to speed up a touch but still only has 50 rounds through it. Next time I go out and shoot I'll shoot a couple of the factory loads and see if there is a difference.

I chronoed 3 factory Hornady Precision Hunter 162 ELD-X rounds at the range this morning and they did pick up a little velocity (2798, 2784, 2804). This is consistent with my hand loads as well as the rifle breaks in. Both have picked up 20-30 fps. My hand loads with the 162 ELD-X and RL 23 are at 2950. I could push it a little faster but that is were I am having the best accuracy and SD. I continue to be impressed with this rifle. Granted, I have only used the one bullet in this rifle but all groups have been under 1 MOA and most are well under that. You could spend a lot more to get the same results.

Thought I'd share this. Just found it and can't find anymore info on the internet web about it. I have a 110 tactical and it's a sub moa tac driver. I'm gonna call and see about in store price. I've been wanting to build my model 11 into this exact rifle. Might just have to pick one of these up.

We just got one in (we have a gun shop in our store for those who don't know) for our accountant in 6.5 PRC. Took it out and got it dialed in. With the hornady 143gr ELDX ammo we are hovering around 1/2 - 3/4 in groups. Got the dope figured out and were consistently hitting a 10in plate at 800 yards. Solid rifles! The stick feels a bit cheap, but is perfect for mountain abuse...

I’m sure it will continue to speed up until you hit 120-150 rounds.

My 6.5 PRC shot commercial 147 gr ELD-M very well. Initial three-shot groups were under half an inch at 100 yards. I could have stayed with that and been "good".

I did get a load developed for it. I wanted the 156 gr Bergers but the 147 gr ELD-M kept edging it out in most categories. The only "category" the Berger beat the ELD-M was in retained energy at 1100 yards; it edged out the ELD-M by 100 ft-lbs at that distance. The ELD-M retained velocity better; at 1100 yards the ELD-M was 32 fps faster. The groups were tighter with the ELD-M as well. The Berger did a 5-shot group at 100 yards at 0.39". The ELD-M did a 5-shot group at 100 yards at 0.21". The ELD-M did keep tighter group at distance as well (do not have those numbers readily available).

The deciding factor was the 5-shot group size as the others (velocity and energy) were so close it was a wash. I will be picking up some commercial 147 gr ELD-M as a "Plan B" just in case something happens to the 200 rounds that I have loaded.

Anybody have experience with the factor ELDX bullets in 6.5 PRC? Curious what kind of groups they shot. Also saw a video where a guy got an ultralight that he had to send back because the reemer tool had been too worn during manufacturing and it wouldn't even chamber some rounds. Anyone else have a bad experience like that?

Didn't try ELD-X in my 6.5 PRC. It shot the commercial 147 gr ELD-M very well. Could have just stopped with them and been good. I went the handled route with 147 gr ELD-M. Got even better groups and better velocity over the commercial version. In a pinch I can use commercial ammo without too much of adjustment (ex: 3.5" @ 500) and 9" @ 700).

Thought I’d share my backcountry rifle. Scales are not perfect, but I believe them to be close.
Savage 110 Ultralite 280AI shooting 162 ELDX factory Hornady, Leupold VX5 3-15x44 with Seekins low rings on a Leupold 20MOA rail. Pics are of last 100yd group. Weight is with 4 rounds. Lightest rifle I’ve ever had and the weight for me allows fairly good offhand steadiness. Average MZ 2860. I’ll defer any technical questions, I’m just a hunter using what works for me.
