Been slowly working on getting a new stock made for a Sako 90 build. Started with a really pretty English walnut blem blank I got a great deal on. Going for some classic-ish looks but some inspiration from the RokStock. Above bore comb, near parallel toe line, but cut square to bore, short trigger reach.
I decided to do a 5 piece maple walnut laminate.
1, so I could skeletonize the butt to cut weight
2, wanted to add stability and strength against warping, cracking, twisting
3, I like the two pinstripe look, also makes it easy to reference center line and symmetry when inletting.

Still long way to go but here is my progress

Pretty smart to pre-cut your runners before the layup. I’m really impressed with how you came up with the hollow cavity to save weight. This really got my mind turning thinking about the possibilities for my next project.

Thanks. Also if you look close you can see locating holes in the middle layers. I put 1/4” dowels through to keep everything lined up and pinned for gluing.

Using a 1/2” rounded router bit with bearing to do barrel channel saves a ton of of time. I also used a sanding reamer for rod building that works really well. They are only like $15 and great help for anyone opening up barrel channels. Also a Jerry Fisher barrel scraper. What took me like a week on my last stock took me about 2 hours on this one. I haven’t even needed to use any inletting black on this one. Having the laminate stripes definitely helps keep everything straight and even.
