I'll have to say, push-ups have got to be one of the most boring exercises! But, today I did my 10 sets of 10 isometrics. Took me an average of 1 minute to complete each set of 10. Gave myself plenty of time to rest between sets, so I started each new set on the 5 minute mark (total of 40 minutes for 10 sets.) I also finished up with lunges to release some testosterone.
If anyone is interested in trying this, I know for sure it works. About 6 years ago I did 10 sets of 10 isometric push-ups every Monday, super-setting the first 5 sets with pull-ups and then doing standing rows after the last 5 were complete. I did this for about 2 months maybe and other exercises during the week. I had 3 consecutive rest days and that started to seem like too much, so I began doing regular push-ups on Fridays. I had been working out before I started the isometrics but usually burned out after about 300 push-ups (obviously not in one set.) When I added the regular push-ups back into my routine along with the isometrics I was doing on Mondays within a couple weeks I was doing 800 in 60 minutes! I would do 4 sets of 50, 5 sets of 40, 10 sets of 30 and 4 sets of 25 dropping the rest time 30 seconds each time I decreased the number of reps. I don't know what my max reps were at that time because I never checked to see.
It should take about one minute to get the 10 reps for one set. Clench everything up - abs, glutes and legs as tight as possible for the duration of the set to get the maximum benefit (don't hurt yourself.) By the 5th or 6th set you should be approaching failure on the final reps of the set. By the 9th and 10th sets you may have to speed up the reps or stretch out a bit between reps to hit all of them. If you don't get a bit of a head rush and see a few dots before your eyes on the final reps of the last set, you're probably not doing them right! Drink an 8 oz. glass of milk with a couple raw eggs and brown sugar mixed in or your favorite protein powder or drink within 10 to 15 minutes of completion. Eat a high protein meal within an hour or two.
