So, I'm currently a 2nd yr electrician apprentice in KY. I'm planning on moving out west (ID, WY) and I was wondering where most of the work is out there/ where you live to do it. Any advice greatly appreciated

Finish your apprenticeship before you move. Most states out here won't accept your credits from Kentucky, so you'd be starting all over again. The work is everywhere, depends on what you want to do. If you rope houses, any town will do. If you do commercial or industrial, you gotta go someplace bigger. If you want to specialize in some of the highest paying jobs, choose carefully, do your research before pulling the trigger. Oregon and Washington will have the best wages, especially if you are IBEW or USW, and that puts you pretty close to MT, WY, or ID for hunting purposes.

As long as KY uses 2017 NEC I dont see why the western states wouldn't accept your accumulated hrs. If they won't recognize your hrs now, they won't when you're licensed.

Can only speak to WY. WY does require school hrs, if you're not already doing some school, something to consider if moving mid apprenticeship. Though its slowing, currently there's a lot of work right now. If you're good you'll have no problem finding work, we're always looking for good apprentices. Type of work is going to be somewhat location dependent. Residential, commercial everywhere. Oilfield, mining, industrial all available depends where you're at, if you're willing to travel etc. Union, meh WY is right to work, hard pass. They do have a good apprenticeship school though. If you dont have anything tieing you down I would move sooner than later before something is.

Not all States have the same training standards as others. Oregon for example may not even recognize your hours or license. They may give you partial credit though.

Eastern Oregon is in high demand right now for electricians. A lot of data centers being built with a lot more to come.

If you're looking at Montana and willing to work, PM me and I can give you a contact in Bozeman to reach out to. Mom & Pop shop that has expanded to about 30 employees and run by a good friend. Who is also an avid back country hunter. He can probably answer any questions you may have about transferring your apprenticeship over - if it is possible. Construction is booming here. That's good and bad. Work is plentiful, housing, not so much.
