Amazing work. You are a REAL craftsman!
I have enjoyed the heck out of this thread! Keep it up!

I started getting into carving wood stocks a couple years ago and have completed a couple projects recently… a pre64 model 70 with a ‘cross the course’ style stock. And a Sako TRG22 project competition rifle with exhibition grade walnut (root wood).

Share some pics of those.

The pre-64 has a new barrel, I’ll have to take more pics…

Thank you AB! And some nice work you’ve done there as well!! That target stock is a super nice piece of wood!! What caliber is your pre 64? I have a semi inlet sitting here for a H&H length pre 64, I need to find some metal for it some day.

Any plans on a next build? Did you do the stippling yourself?

Since summer has hit, I haven’t been at the stock bench at all, but have been getting some shooting in!! This SAUM is really liking the VLD’s. 168gr usually go in the same hole, the 180’s are showing promise as well. I shot on our 1000 yard range a couple weeks ago, two five shot groups, 9” and 11”, I was quite pleased with those with the smoke and mirage I was fighting with.

3 different powder charges with H1000 and 168gr VLD’s

I’m way up here in Canada, but I’ll throw out there, this rifle does have a price tag on it now, Iv been told it needs to go before I can build another lol.

Thanks! The pre-64 is a fast twist 25-06 for the 133+gr bullets. I did the stippling myself, on the pre-64 I used nails and on the TRG I used a dremmel.

I have so many projects with wood stocks… I’m picking back up on a mauser project with a classic style stock.

I have another target rifle (using the new ARC action), another pre-64 after that, then a Tikka 595, a commercial HVA mauser, etc. I have enough wood to last a while.

That’s a beautiful rifle…. If I was wealthy I’d buy it. I’m on a single income with 3 kids and one on the way… so I have to be very selective about buying rifles these days.

It’s a shame more people don’t appreciate wood. The disadvantages of wood are greatly overstated in terms of accuracy and consistency. I have actually designed carbon fiber stocks and I have nothing against them, I use them and like them, but those “rifles” are tools, “real rifles” for me have wood stocks. Just my opinion.,

That’s another gorgeous piece of walnut!! A nice 7x57 on a Mauser is high on my list of wants.

I couldn’t agree more with your last statement, a properly finished wood stock is just as good imo.

I have a pretty cool build project coming up this winter for a friend. If he’s ok with it, I’ll start another project thread in the later fall.

I did an FN Mauser in 257AI that is a dream to shoot.. Used a nice piece of wood in it with 3 position model 70 style safety and love the little rifle...

Couldn’t find photos of my 257ai and it is in my brothers safe, but I did find photos of an early Mauser that I did several years ago. The 257 is similar design with much nicer wood. I found a really nice 7x57 and just cleaned it up and restocked it. I’ve hunted with it (open sights) and killed a number of deer with it. I love the old caliber. I did all the wood and metal work.
