Rifle Choice for Whitetails

The Tikka and a Trijicon would be a great combo.

The only thing I would add is a suppressor........

this made me re-think my entire decision. But that is why I came here. I really wanted the .243 caliber. It has some sentimental attachment to me due to my hunting beginnings. However it doesn't look like the AB3 or the Tikka t3x Hunter come with a threaded barrel. I realize I can get any barrel threaded afterwards but I've never done this and the simplicity of having a rifle with an already threaded barrel seems obvious. I have never had a suppressor and love the idea of using one for hunting. At the moment we use electronic ear muffs.

It looks like the CZ American 600 would come in .243 with a wood stock and a threaded barrel. It also looks like a Howa 1500 does as well. Perhaps I need to get over the wooden stock thing and branch out.

I appreciate you all sharing your expertise.

Having a barrel threaded is super easy. Even a sporter Tikka barrel.

Remove the bolt, take the barreled action out of the stock, remove the trigger (one cap screw). Package it up, send it to Kampfeld Custom with $140 and return shipping $, wait three weeks, get it back, reassemble, and shoot.
With ATF approval times being what the are, you will probably get your can and threaded barrel around the same time.

Also, the new Tikkas do come with threaded barrels.

As for wanting wood stocks, while I get it wanting to look a certain way, you can customize polymer or CF stocks however you feel. In fact it would be cool to paint it with your daughter as another project. Get her excited about it being hers and like nobody else’s.

Tikka for sure, but in 223

I picked up a Savage Axis 2 in 6 ARC for a similar purpose (teaching my niece to shoot).

The bolt lift on the Axis is heavy enough to give me second thoughts about her ability to fire a quick follow up shot. (She hasn't shot it yet, but even for me its a bit stiff). I have trouble cycling the bolt while staying in the scope.

The Tikka is a good choice, but the cost of the Tikka + barrel threading can get you into a price range that could push you into the realm of a nicer rifle.

The last thing I would consider is that you mentioned wanting a 243 Win for sentimental reasons. If you are the sentimental type, I don't recommend compromising to save a few dollars. This is a gun that you and her both will treasure for a long time.

I would be inclined to suggest the Bergara Stroke Compact if you want something in that price range that is already threaded, but I have heard good things about the CZ too.

Maybe there’s a good .223 AR

My grandson is shooting my browning x bolt in a 6.5 creedmore and loves it.He also uses a ruger american in 300 blackout.

If a kid is using it I might consider the browning a little more since the bolt can be opened with the rifle on safe. I know as a kid I always liked that in my rifles

Howa carbon stocked 6 arc. Factory 108 eldm. Would do whatever she needs for life and be a joy to shoot. Prolly shoot it better than anything else you come up with.

Legal nearly everywhere being above the .22’s.

Tikka with Trijicon for sure. Just make sure you get good rings

There are rings out there I certainly consider “bad,” but what do you mean when you say “good rings.”

Rings that won’t contribute to loss of zero. For example vertically split rings or most clamshell designs.
