A few years ago, I built two .280 AI rifles using an Origin action and Greyboe stocks. Since I did it myself, I made a few mistakes and am in the process of rebuilding one to be more of a lighter rifle. I am not trying to build something like a Kimber Hunter.

Goal = get it around 8 pounds scoped, not counting the suppressor.

Step 1: Replaced the Greyboe stock with a Stocky’s CF stock and shaved 14.7 ounces off a 10 lb 7 oz rifle. New weight: 9 lbs 7 oz.

Step 2: The heavy sporter 20” .280 AI barrel is overly chunky. Solution: I ordered a 16” 7 BC barrel with a tapereless profile. I hope the 7 BC will get velocities as fast or slightly higher than the current barrel achieves. I don’t know what the new barrel will weigh, but I am hoping to get the rifle well under 9 lbs.

Step 3: Subtract 4 oz on scope.
The Trijicon Huron 4–16×50 BDC weighs 24 oz. I don’t like the 50mm front objective. Once my RokScope arrives, it will go on my .243 Tikka (which gets shot a lot), and I’ll replace the Huron with the .243’s Leupold scope weighing 20 oz.

Step 4: Run it with a titanium suppressor; add 8–10 oz.
