I'm glad to see this coming to light on this forum! I'm sure we're all well aware of how ridiculous and inefficient the political system can be in America, and that makes it hard for us to motivate ourselves to speak up for our own interests as it can seem like a waste of effort. This really is a crucial time for this specific issue though. Living in Nevada, the state with by far the largest percentage of federal land (81%-85% depending on source), this has been getting a lot of attention in the Senate and House. There have already been several bills in the senate to start the ball rolling on privatization of these lands. Fracking has already begun, and the second those show any promise, the highest bidders will roll in, buy it for pennies, and build a fence around it all. Unfortunately, the whole issue boils down to money. And money really shouldn't be a factor in this equation, as there isn't a price you can put on this.
“States in the east, the federal government owns less than 5 percent of the land. The people of New York are perfectly fine with that. The people of Florida are perfectly fine with that. The people of Texas are perfectly fine with that.”-Cruz
This is so far from the truth... I'm sure in his circle of friends in Texas that own 100,000 acre ranches are "fine with that". The people of New York/Florida/Texas don't know it any other way. Those people don't have a say in the matter unfortunately, as it's already privatized. Are they supposed to speak out in hopes of people selling their land back to the government? That's not even in the realm of possibilities.
“State ownership would be better, but even better would be private ownership,” said Paul
For the land owner yes. For every single other person in the country, no.
The idea of losing "MY/OUR" lands is horrifying to me! This isn't something that we can undo! There is no going back from this. The Federal Government isn't the best "business" out there, but we do have a largely functional education system, and fairly well maintained highways that cover our country. To think that any person/company could manage land any better for
us, the general public, with
our best interests in mind, is irrational.
I'll leave you with the words of my good buddy Larry McKurtis who posted an article on this last year...
