Last minute deal with no specific details about where/how much. Call me suspicious.

They won’t stop at just 100,000 acres. This is just a way to get their foot in the door. This administration has his eye on public lands that can be extracted. Project 2025 suggested that they take funds away from GAOA to re-institute the buyback program for tribal lands which is going to happen. From BHA:

“MISSOULA, Mont. – Less than a week after expressing cautious optimism over the exclusion of public land sales in the House Republicans’ budget proposal, Backcountry Hunters & Anglers (BHA) is condemning a late-night maneuver that sidestepped stakeholder engagement and ignored conservation impacts. Just before midnight, members of the House Natural Resources Committee advanced an amendment authorizing the sale of upwards of 100,000 acres of public lands in Utah and Nevada. The surprise provision was opposed by all Democratic members of the committee and Representative Jeff Hurd (R-CO).”

It would tickle me pink if they sold the checkerboarded, landlocked, blm land in eastern Montana that the surrounding property owners use like they own it. Make all 4 sides fight for it, or sell it direct to Californians to really piss them off.

The ranchers use BLM land for grazing. The grazing leases typically go along with the ranches when they are sold for the most part. The cattle industry needs those BLM grazing leases. The ranchers also have grazing leases on NFS lands as well. Some of those grazing leases really “trash” habitat. There is no reason for that other than greed. Really though, in the 21st century we now have the Mortensen Principle which rejuvenates the short grass prairie back to the way it was before the extermination of the buffalo. Restored short grass prairie will graze more cattle. I like my ribeye steaks. The grandkids love their hamburgers. Elk or buffalo meat though is definitely tops.

Infinite Outdoors pays landowners in the checkerboard for access to bordering public lands. They don’t charge the hunter for that access. I have no affiliation with that business, just passing on what I consider to be a good thing for hunters and anglers:

BLUF, Republicans are much more open to the fact selling public land is a bad idea than Democrats are open to the fact draconian gun laws and hunting bans are a bad idea.

That’s not a defense of the fact this was in the bill from the get go, but history has proven it to be true.

Vote accordingly.
